I have tried to muck around with the wizard etc and i also followed the instructions on page cannot be displayed. I opened the tools menu and click on automatically detect settings. Surely if the wee box at the bottom right is flashing and saying enabled then i should be able to access internet? This is a computer i got from my workplace, its just over a year old and runs XP Pro.

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) should have supplied you with some information to access their system.

You need to assign a MANUAL IP ADDRESS to your computer.

START>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK SETTINGS.

Right-click on the LAN icon and select Properties.

Under the General Tab, click once on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on Properties.

Click once on "Use the following IP Address" and the dot should appear beside it.

Under IP Address, use 192 then 168 then 001 then 010

Under Subnet mask, leave it at 255 . 255 . 255 . 0

Under Default Gateway use 192 then 168 then 1 then 1
(This is usually sufficient for a broadband router - if yours is different, use your own number.)

Underneath the IP Address boxes, click once on "Use the following DNS server addresses"

In the Preferred DNS server boxes, type the "PRIMARY DNS" of your ISP.

In the Alternate DNS Server, type the SECONDARY DNS of your ISP.

They sometimes have these listed on their website under the FAQ section. Or you can call them up and ask them.

If I have trouble getting a PC to connect automatically to the Internet, I set a Manual IP Address and it works beautifully.

its been happening a load to me this week - not sure what the problem is exactly, but the best way to fix it is to reset your Cable Modem, the device that transforms the Co-axial cable lead into the wire that runs into your computer. That will do it.

And if it doesn't turn off when you unplug it, its not a poltergeist: just unplug the internal battery. That totally freaked me out.

Wait a minute....if your here on the internet then that means..... SPOOKY!!!!!

this is a common problem, its more than likely to do with the router,i used to have similar problems and i asked my broadband supplier for a new router and the problem went
however from time to time the internet connection does go down, then all you need to do is switch off the router for 2 minutes and then turn it back on,wait for all the lights to relight and then try your internet explorer again,
note:if your using a ethernet connection you really should be able to just plug your ethernet lead from your p.c to the router and you should get a connection straight away
if you using a usb connection then this is where the problem may lie, change to a ethernet connection
good luck mate!

dont just unplug your internet connection, but try knocking the internet programmes off the computer completely and then reinstalling from scratch. this is a bit of a fiddle but it generally solves the problem if nothing else works. dont forget to reinstall your security protection again.

you may have a network copy of windows and it is set to only do what the company allows it to do thru their servers. You may have to reformat the drive and put a fresh copy of windows on it and see how that works for you. I ran into the same problem buying school computers. the operating system was limited to what you could make it do because it was loaded from a network with network administrator rules applied.

dear willow:
sometimes your ips start bather you. That happens to me, try this: go like you are going to open a browser when the page display cannot open this browser type your ips address to verify your modem settings. I dont know which internet provider you had but here are some of them with the setting address:
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.1
192.168.2.1
if none of them are call your service provider and they will help you on the phone.

I am really puzzled that you are asking this question but you are unable to connect to the Internet.
If you could expand a little, perhaps we could help resolve this.
Your additional information has made me wonder if Internet access is denied because you are not an authorised administrator.

You must contact the company responsible for the physical lines. If they say the lines is all right, you must contact the company responsible for the software, or connection system you are a subscriber of.
