My 1996 taurus, a.c. compressor is locked up, breaking the serpintine belt. Can I bypass the a.c. without replacing it?

biker trash. Just got off the phone with autozone. They have a bypass pully, part number34166. but how hard will that be to replace it?

If the AC compressor locked up you can just unplug the AC clutch wires on the compressor and be good to go. I am assuming the bearings went out of the the AC clutch pulley instead, this would lock the pulley up and break the belt. If the compressor didn't get too hot you can replace just the bearing, it is Ford number E9SZ-19D666-A or NAPA number BRG5106WCC, it only costs about $50. Ford racing does does sell an AC elimination kit for either the 5.0 or 4.6 Mustang/T-Bird but I am not sure if the number of belt grooves is the same as a Taurus, if your local Ford dealer sells Ford performance parts they should be able to help you figure it out. The last option would be a used compressor from your local salvage yard.

Most cars have a separate belt for the AC. Just leave it without a belt. If you only have one belt that runs everything, check an auto store for the size of a belt that can by-pass the compressor and work everything else.

Check the auto parts store to see if they have a belt for a taurus w/o a/c.
