Those items are tools. What these things do is help you focus your personal Will on the results you want, and keep you focussed when you use or encounter them. They only have the power you give them, but when you do give them power, it is so they can later remind you of your goal.
The more energy you put into achieving your will, the more likely you are to get results. Just beware of backfires, and make sure your will is for beneficial results. Love Potions are dangerous because you'll never be sure if the person is with you because they care about you, or because they're manipulated. Plus, if there's stuff you don't know about the guy, it can get really hard to get away. Better to open yourself to "the best Lover for Me" and see what happens. And since it's your Will you are exerting, do the boring stuff too. Mundane protections and acting in the world to improve your luck are part of exerting Will.

If you believe in them then they will work for you and I won't tell you not to use them.
However, I believe that you can acheive this kind of thing with energywork that wouldn't cost a thing - well except for the increased love life which is only going to backfire in the end. If things are personal to you, they will be much more potent. Meditiation and awaremess can keep away negative energy as well or better than a 'thing' to do so.

I make my own oils , magickal inks, floorwashes, incenses etc and find them to be extremely effective. I'd never use a "Love potion " though , a nice homemade perfume oil has more effect.

personally i dont but mi friend shes really superstitous and spirtitaual she says they help her out a little bit but its all depends on her destiny o somn like dat well i dont really kno kus when evr she startz talkn bout dat stuff im daydreamn bout sumn [i stay wit mi hed n da cloudz] so by her standrdz sure they help 2 give her confidence that she'll b ok n stuff like that
