Following the Partition of India in 1947, Bengal (along with Punjab) was divided along religious lines. The western part went to India (and so was named West Bengal) while the eastern part joined Pakistan as a province called East Bengal (later renamed East Pakistan in 1956, and then independent country of Bangladesh after the bloody Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971).

If the province Bengal is in the east of India it doesn't mean that the western part of it should be called anything else other than 'West'.

London is situated in the Eastern part of England but has a 'West End'.
