Jordan would be a better example of how an Islamic government doesn't have to be secular yet can still be peaceful.
And I really hope you meant "religion should be kept out of politics."

Turkey boasts to be a secular country that models itself on and desires to be part of the West. Therefore, they wish to wipe out any signs of Islam in ordinary life and confine Islam to the mosque. This includes banning women from wearing headscarves in offices, parliament, schools etc.
This is, in effect, discrimination against a person's basic human rights ... just one of the numerous violations made by Turkey.
Here's the thing : I can't speak for other religions but Islam is not meant to be secular ... you cannnot follow the teachings of Islam in the mosque yet disregard it in everyday life.
Turkey, as with many Middle Eastern countries (including the Gulf states like Saudi Arabia) do not follow the true teachings of Islam. Otherwise, there would not be repression against their own people and discrimination and violence against their domestic workers.
Arab states have immense wealth yet they are weak ... that's because their leaders are ruled by greed. The wealth is held by the privileged few. And many Arabs (not all) who come abroad think that they are the bee's knees and they often treat others with contempt.
Despite being the cradle of Islam, I would say that the Middle East including Turkey is not a good example to other Muslim countries.
And I disagree that religion creates turmoil ... people create turmoil ... dictators create turmoil (yes, that includes the US of A and their Bush) ... greed creates turmoil.

Sorry, religion can't be secular from religion. Anyhew, Turkey definitely is NOT secular; they are deep into Muslimism (or whatever people want to call it nowadays) and is home to some of the oldest Christian churches in the world. Also, their government is a far cry from the representative govenment in the States. What would be a minor infraction here can result in the death penalty, just as in Iran, Iraq, Arabia or any other Muslim country.
Also, it is not just disagreement between religious sects: what is politics, but a big disagreement?

Turkey likely has made more improvements than some areas--true. I think many nations lack the "first amendment" style rights. If someone decides to convert their religion, they are (at best) kicked out of their family -- perhaps they're killed for renouncing Islam.
The press? I don't know that the press in many nations has the right to ask questions of political leaders that the western world press is allowed. Free speach? Again...
Those three elements need to be strong in a democracy with regular elections that allow peaceful transfer of power.
If at those times, 95% of the people still remain Muslim and decide to elect and promote Muslim ideals, that's fine. No one should be killed for deciding to skip church... etc.

turkeys situation is a frying pan and fire.politics with no religion, is purely cosmetic, its a greedy bloodsucking affair where money and power is the god, it also legalises the sins of the world so they can be freely practised, politicians are the raveging wolf of any society, who like to blame the ills of the world on religion.
religion has spiritual goodness, but its no good if the religion is false and does not have gods stamp of approval and that applies to all religions, there are about 2000 different christian denominations, but there can only be one that serves the whole world, but any religion that adopts the thou
shalt not kill law, is better than any political organisation. if a religion kills without it being in self defense it is out of order.
what you have then is political minded trying to work religion
to become politicians. churches are ful of satanic infiltrators
stiring up trouble.

Justice and Development (AKP) won. That's the Islamist party. If anything came out of Turkey it is that the Middle East region should be allowed to choose its leaders Islamist or not.
If AKP had been denied its right to govern, as Hamas was, chances are there would be much unrest, as there is in Palestine.
Besides, AKP has done a terrific job on the economy. Hamas as also been a model for responsible government. Somalia's Islamic Courts were quite effective until the US and Ethiopia invaded.
There is a lesson. When the west denies countries their right to self determination, violence ensues.
Why do westerners feel compelled to direct the political destiny of foreign countries? The Middle East wishes Islamists in their government. What is it to you?

Well it was but the government recently elected is seen as a pro Islamist government so we'll have to wait and see if they bring about change.
This new government was voted in because of their appeal to the less well off Turks living in far flung places - as is usual, democracy/secular etc does tend to leave country folk behind in the economic stakes - this is were religious parties always pick up votes.

I don't know enough about the Turkish system of government and especially its judicial system to make a judgement.
But, on the surface it would appear that way.

Turkey is not a secular country and to prove this look Armenian Genocide. Christan's over 1.5 million had been killed , enslaved, and starved. it was the first genocide of the 20th century.
There is a Turkish saying it is OK to kiss your enemy's feet to cut his throat.
Never trust a Muslim as we are non believers and just like Obama he says he convert from Islam and no Muslims have put Fatwas on him or said one word. He used the code words of he would use his faith on non believers on You tube.
Turkey did not us to use its northern boarder with Iraq and this cost American lives. They only care about them selves.
