There are two methods of digging. The first method is to turn the topsoil over to one spade's depth. This opens up the soil and is best done in autumn, so that the winter frosts can break up the lumps of soil and reduce to a fine tilth in the spring.

The second method, known as double digging, is hard work. You dig a trench the width of your plot, then take the newly dug soil to the other end of the plot. You then fork over the bottom of the trench. Put in fertiliser if necessary, then dig the next trench and put it in to the first one. Fork over the bottom of the second trench. Repeat until you are at the other end, then fill the last trench with the soil from the first. Hard work, yes - but you'll have fantastic rhubarb!
