For some reason it is considered as a sport. I've always said it shouldn't be considered a sport. But it's a sport because it does take some skill driving those cars. I think they go somewhere between 200-250 mph. It does take some skill controlling a car going that fast-that's why there are so many crashes in NASCAR. The races also take a very long time to complete. It gets hot in those cars and it can take a lot of energy out of you-just like in every sport. In conclusion, car racing is considered a sport b/c:
-It takes some skill
-you need a lot of stamina to do it

What makes it is sport is conditioning. For instance, a pro basketball player could play 48 min of basketball, but could maybe only play ten minutes of tennis because they are not trained for that sport. The same goes for auto racing, you must train in order to do well for the sport. Do you think a basketball player would be able to do 500 miles in a race car. That is just the way that I see it. If that does not help you out then I would say you could call it a Motor Sport

What makes anything a sport? All a sport is, is an activity involving some physical exertion which is governed by a set of rules and which is engaged in competitively.
So lets go through this one term at a time:
Physical exertion, racing definately involves that. it's not easy to fight a steering wheel traveling at 200+MPH, not to mention the split second reaction times of hitting the gas/break/clutch when needed.
Governed by a set of rules, every major auto racing series has a set of rules, there's no denying that.
Engaged in competitively, turn on your TV any given sunday afternoon and you'll see racing being engaged in quite competitively. Wheather it's NASCAR or F1 or whatever, those drivers are out there to win.
So there you go, three-for-three, auto racing is a sport, topic can be closed.

The answer to your question is simple.
Definition of "sport": An activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
Car racing involves teams and drivers all driving competitively to outdo each other. Therefore, car racing qualifies as a sport.

Yes. It is a sport because...wait for it, this might be a rant.
Go into your car when it has just been sitting out there on a hot summer day. It's hot, isn't it. Really hot. Maybe 100 degrees. Then just sit in it for 4 hours. While doing this (no air conditioning), go on a very crowded freeway (maybe LA or Chicago) and just drive, swerving around traffic as fast as you can. Multiply all this by 2. Drivers lose 8 pounds a race by doing this in 130 degree cars going at 150 mph. And if they make one mistake, their car is totaled. THAT's why it's a sport.

Does it make a difference...If I said I enjoyed autoracing but after reading a few remarks, I came to the conclusion that I agreed that it is not a sport ..I no longer watch or appreciate anything to do with auto racing....because it is not a sport.....Does that make sense ?.....No...to a 10 year old maybe....Maybe
People listen to music....I'm pretty sure music is not a sport...I just don't understand the relevance of the question....It...at the very least....sounds childish and irrelevant

Why not?
Auto racing (also known as car racing, automobile racing, autosport or motorsport) is a sport involving racing automobiles. Auto racing began in France in 1895 and is now one of the world's most popular spectator sports.
It's a sport because what else can cars be classified as- songs or music or art??? None, except sports!

I really would like to know how its not? (with a better reason than they do cirlces) But these athletes have the longest schedule of any sport, lose 10-15 pounds per race, Have a consistent threat of dieing every lap, train just as much as those other sports you watch, travel more distance venue to venue, play in more demanding weather. The demand is higher because there is 15-17 winner every week in football, 9-12 winners everyday in base ball, but only one every week in racing. Im bothered when people say it isnt. Even by definition it is, look it up because i know its there. Anybody who says and truly believes it isnt, is ignorant. Because other than Hockey and soccer, I cant think of a harder sport.

If it can directly kill you, it's a sport!
Free climbing, base jumping, bull fighting and auto racing are true sports and the participants are sportsmen.
If it can't kill you directly, it's a game.
Baseball, football, basketball, soccer or football as it's known everywhere but the USA, tennis, golf and poker are all games.
The participants are called players.
Hunting, fishing and their offshoots of shooting, archery and casting are skills of survival and war, not sport nor game.
The participants are called outdoorsmen.
