a big bug (6cm long) with a sting of 1cm long appeared in my conservatory today. Its in a jam jar and i'm having no luck identifying it. Any ideas where to look? I'd just bought 4 bag of bark chips and laid them in my garden this morning.....could there be a connection.

Three possibilities:

A wasp, but not likely based on the size.

Based on the size, it could be a queen bee, and if it has not attacked you, then that is most plausible.

Alternatively, it could be a hornet, which is quiet rare but not impossible in this country. They tend to be quiet aggressive, so if it has been attacking you, then thats a good indicator.

A picture would be needed to identify it properly.

From the outline it looks like a beetle. yet beetles do no longer chew or sting human beings, bushes on the different hand ... in spite of the actuality that if the wings are above the physique, then a cukoo bee or wasp might desire to be the respond. on account that bugs have their skeleton on the exterior, all bugs are stressful exterior. If there's a next time, seize it in a jar, quite than flushing it.
