wants to be a social worker/counselor specializing in gender issues, like providing mental health services to transgender/transsexual youth?

Social Work (there are plenty of BSW programs out there)
Counseling (probably needs to be a master's)
Psychology (if you want to get a PhD)

These three are different than the academic study of sociology, psychology, and gender studies or gay/lesbian studies. Those seek to "understand and explain" but don't spend much time learning to "help".

When you say you want to "provide services" we are talking about a practitioner degree whereas "learn about" or "study" is an academic degree. There's a huge difference. :-) This is the reason many people aren't able to get the job they thought they were qualifying for with their degree.

This is an area that you will likely want to get a graduate degree in. It may also require licensing by your state.

Psychology, sociology, or, if your school has it, you can even major in LBGT studies, or gender studies. Some schools actually tuck transgender/transsexual issues under their women's studies programs. You may also find a fit, depending on the program, in history.

An aside: You can't usually get an undergraduate degree in social work. Those are MS level programs.

Needless to say, you'll want to find a school that is serious about these issues, and accepting.

You can get a degree in "social work." I have a friend who recently completed her Master's, though I'm not sure what her exact degree title is. The best thing to do is call a counselor at the college or university you want to attend and set up a meeting to discuss your goals. They will help you form a "game plan" to get there. Good luck!

Try a BSW/BSHS or if you are at a Masters level look into a MSW or MAC. Good luck.
