I recently bought a book to collect the fifty state quarters and it has fifty slots for states and an extra six blanks slots outside of the map. Are there six other quarter designs? Or are they just for extra use in case?

According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, there will be a total of 100 quarters produced for the 50 State Quarters Program, 1 of each state from both the Denver and Philadelphia Mints (look for a small "D" or "P" under "In God We Trust" next to George Washington).

The Mints won't even be producing the traditional "Eagle" quarters during the 1999 – 2008 program.

I noticed that some display maps have 6 (or more) slots outside the map to accommodate states too small to actually place the quarter in. Some display folders also provide a 51st slot to display the "heads" side of the quarter.

If any of the United States territories are admitted into the Union before the end of the Program in 2008, the Secretary of the Treasure may include that state in the program, otherwise no quarters will be produced for the territories.

They may make at least 5 more for other areas that are actually part of the U.S, Washington DC for one, as well as the Marshall Islands and the rest. There are more American citizens around than people think. Don't' forget Guam.

Haven't you heard. We begin the invasion of Canada tomorrow. We're only taking the good bits though, which is why there are only six slots. Quebec, Manitoba? Who needs 'em?
