I'm only finding 3 "locally" (PA, MN)
Least, Short-tailed and Long-tailed.
I saw the photos. At this time of year, could those be babies that have not achieved full growth yet and may be missing the dark hairs at the tip of the tail? Especially since there were 2 of them found together?
"Long-tail and short-tail weasels, however, bear a single litter of five to eight each year. They mate in summer, when food is abundant and physical conditions are at peak, but the tiny embryos do not implant on the female’s uterine wall until ten months later, sometime in the spring. This delayed implantation allows for birthing to occur at the beginning of the summer season and mating to not have to take place under stressful conditions of winter. "
They seem to have a 35 day gestation season, so this would be about the right time for small babies to appear around. It is very sad.
On the other hand, it MIGHT be that they are least weasels:

1. ferrets and chinchillas are probably legal just about everywhere. 2. yes a ferret is of the weasel family. 3. weasels and ferrets can both be wild animals but domestic ferrets are calmer. 4. the guy from the pet store said he knew a man that owned 16 year old ferrets and that they can live for about as long as a dog. weasels probably live for about 6 or so. chinchillas can live to about 18 or so years.
