This isn't the tax on the oil corporations they promised, its a tax on the final cost at the pump - paid for by YOU the consumer.

Is that because they realize taxing the company has the exact same effect?

One would hope they can find the $9.4 billion per year they need in the $286 billion per year spending on transportation. Perhaps if they stop the corrupt practice of earmarks, and prioritize things, they don't need additional tax.

The legislature is too greedy. Apparently, spending $2.7+ trillion per year, most of which is of dubious Constitutional legality, doesn't include the $9.4 billion per year (0.35% of the budget, 3.3% of the transportation budget) needed to fix the bridges.

Sorry, but if they cannot find it within that budget to fix the bridges, they're full of crap. And they sure as hell shouldn't be raising taxes to get it.

When people won't stop polluting and driving gas guzzlers that force us to buy ARAB oil maybe raising the price will wake some people up. Since money is not available any other way to fix the infrastructure a tax on gasoline may be necessary to keep more people on not falling off bridges. I have heard zero, zip, no alternatives from the GOP only complaints. How do we solve the infrastructure problem with existing budgets? Do we do more borrow and spend so our great grand children will still be paying for what we use?

The Congress floated an idea to increase the gas tax by 5 cents to be put in a trust fund to repair bridges and roads.

The President has said that he will veto any bill with that provision in it and has instructed the Congress to cut something out (i.e. be revenue neutral).

So why are you posing such an inflammatory question? Just to start a flame war yet again on Yahoo Answers?

When Exxon and Conoco Phillips are raking in record quarterly and yearly profits, yes, people will complain about gas prices. When the oil and refining companies are sticking it to you by ramping up the prices, the 2-3 cents in tax to make sure that the bridge you're crossing doesn't end up in the river is chump change.

with a 51% majority the Democrats don't have that kind of power.

The ONLY way a bill like that could go through is with the support and approval of President bush or most of the Republicans in the house..

Probably. They have blamed him for everything else including toe bridge that fell in Minn. Guess they're sort of anal in their thinking. It's a shame we cant get past politics and just focus on whats best for the public and the country.;

oh boo hoo, five cents, big deal. No one who isnt driving a hummer is going to care about that, and if you can afford a hummer you arent going to care either. Id rather pay a couple extra pennies than have the freaking bridge collapse under the weight of your gas guzzling suv and take me with it. besides, one week in iraq is costing the taxpayers about 15 billion in taxes, hows that for a nice little subsidy to the oil companies.

I just overheard a conversation, the person said she spends $500-$600 per month on gasoline (she probably makes $25K to $30K per year given her job). I make 4 times that and only spend $160 per month on gas (including a weekly 228 mile round trip to my beach house). I only use my cars to get to work (10 miles round trip) and to go between my houses. I do a lot of walking and bicycling to stores and combine trips if I need to go anywhere too far to bike or walk. I guess Bush must be forcing her to make a lot of bad decisions (somehow, he hasn't forced me into making the same bad decisions, strange). I'm sure people will blame him on anything they perceive as bad or inconvenient, even when they have control over how much they spend on fuel.

yes. taxes are a percentage of total product. the more expensive the product the more taxes you pay. Therefore when George started funk with hugo and the middle east, our prices skyrocketed and caused taxes to increase.

Just to let you know, neither party can pass any law without the other side's help. And show me where it is the Democrats wanting this passed?
