According to a September 2006 post by Ash.org, a UK anti-smoking group, the legal age is currently 16, though there is some discussion of raising it:

"Is raising the minimum age from 16 to 18 an appropriate strategy?

5. There is little evidence to show that, as a stand-alone policy, simply raising the legal age for the purchase of tobacco reduces smoking prevalence among young people. Measures that affect the whole population, such as tobacco advertising bans, raising the price of tobacco, etc. are more likely to reduce smoking rates among both adults and young people than a measure that affects only one segment of the population."

You may smoke at any age in the UK, but you must be 16 to buy them. From October 1st the legal age will be 18.

Also there are restricted areas, and you may not smoke in public places.

There is no legal age to smoke, but to buy them you have to be atleast 16 years of age. Soon probably be increasing to 18.

The legal (physical) age to buy / smoke is definitely 16. They are now looking at putting this up to 18. The average mental age is a lot younger... They haven't put a limit on that one.

In the UK you may smoke at ANY age, but a retailer must not sell them to anyone under 16 (soon being raised to 18)
