Robert Walpole, who served between 1721-42, is generally regarded as the first modern British Prime Minister, although the first person to be identified as "First Minister" was William Pitt the Younger, who served between 1783-1801. The first mention in writing using the exact title "Prime Minister" was of Benjamin Disraeli, who served first in 1868 and then between 1874 and 80.
