Whoa, don't listen to that one ... the whole notion of the Middle Ages is a bit muddled, because one might well ask, "middle of what?" Usually it is the time period between the fall of the last Roman emperor in the West in 476 (in France) up through the end of the War of the Roses in England in 1485, with the period 476 - 1000 classified as the Dark Ages and the period 1000 - 1485 as the High Middle Ages.

However, there is some disagreement. Some take 312 or 315 as the beginning, both dates dealing with Emp. Constantine's victories; and end points perhaps as 1453, the fall of the Byzantine Empire ... it all depends on who you are, where you are from and what you consider important.

The fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century is generally considered the beginning. It ends at the Rensaissance, the date of which is more debatable - its not like everyone just woke up one day and thought "Wow! it's the Renaissance!" Also, Renaissance thought reached different areas of Europe at different times (starting in Italy, ending in the far northern counties). The 15th century is considered the transition period.

The Middle Ages are frequently broken down into subgroups. Life in the 7th century was considerably different from life in the 13th, for example.

I believe that most historians agree that it was the period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Italian Renaissance.
