I don't really think there are REAL pirates sailing around the ocean anymore. Yeah, thats pretty much it... they've been extinct. There are terrorists and thieves... but not pirates where the attire and all that.

Yes. And piracy has not changed. It's still a matter of taking over another ship and taking what you want from it. It was NEVER pretty or elegant or classy. (or rarely, excepting Cpt. Bartholomew Roberts).
One of the men who raced in the America's Cup was killed by pirates on the Amazon. As noted earlier, pirates upgrade weapons and ships just like the rest of the world. They attempted the takeover of several cruise ships within the past few years, and were mostly driven off.

You bet there is!
As long as there are maritime merchants, there will be people who try to steal from them. There are a good amount of them in the Caribbean still. Today they wear cammos and carry around machine guns but they are there. I actually remember hearing about a rather large pirate raid on a merchant ship a few years ago. Also, remember that, just like in the colonial days, these people are vicious and often times thugs and murderers.

Is it not so common these days as most ships are simply too large for any group of modern day pirates to attack. Although, it has been known to happen, on occasion that one of the smaller, personally owned vessels has been attacked, often times the entire craft is taken along with its occupants and anything of value on it, only later to be found abandoned after being used for some OTHER sort of activity.
So they do still exist, although not on the scale that they once did. Too bad too.

well not the kinds with hooks as hands and cool hats with eye patches. Pirate raids on ships are very common in the South China See, and the Pacific Islands by Malaysia

Yes, in fact there has been several attacks of the coast of Somalia in recent months. Google a search and you can read about them. Modern pirates use grenade launchers and machine guns with speedboats, kind of takes away from the whole eye patch, peg leg, drunken women, pirates of old.

If cruise ships are mounting ship to ship missles and chain guns, you know there are still pirates.

Yes there still are pirates. They are more like terrorists of the sea and boat jack people and steal belongings.
