I can't understand some of my colleagues and relatives who are working their little ****'s off and salting as much as they can of their earnings away into pensions etc so that they can have a cushty retirement, some of them hardly see their partners and children except when they're completely shattered. They'll be too worn out to enjoy their pensions or dead the way some of them are going!!
There has to be a happy medium doesn't there?

of course it does....one of my fav sayings is you have to smell the roses once and a while! You need to enjoy life, along w/ working hard. Reward your hard work now, dont wait till your old and retired. Its nice to dream about a nice retirement but to lose out on life to get there does not make any sence. There is a happy medium, you have to work hard for what you want but you need to enjoy all that hard work everyonce and a while!

Good Q!!!

You're right, there should be a happy medium. I think that the financial "grand poo-baas" have scared us all into thinking that there will be no Social Security left when we retire and so we're trying to sock it away so we won't run out of money when we're old.
It's hard to put money away for retirement, college for the kids, and still have money to live on. So it's easy for me to see why people are running themselves ragged. But, there has got to be a limit to the time spent working instead of living for the things that matter i.e. family and friends.
Good question. I wish you well.

It is hard to save for a pension especially if it not tied in to your job. Happily enough my job is with the National Health Service in the UK and so has their own pension scheme that employeeys pay into.
I agree with Jessy you have to stop and smell the roses, the honeysuckle, and any other fragrant bloom that you come across as you walk life's path.
Work is not the be all and end all of life.

I did this early on to fulfill a short term goal of circumnavigating the world in a sailboat -- profile--

Now I work 7a-5p have weekends off and love the time I get to spend with my family.

What's the point of life if you arent living?

Optimists save for the future, because tomorrow is going to be a better day.
Pessimists spend now, because tomorrow's gonna suck even more than today.
It all depends on your perspective, and how responsible you feel about the welfare of others.

From the experience I have had in the sudden loss of my partner I would say make the most of your family and loved ones now as you never know what will happen tomorrow.

well the "happy medium" isn't going to tell us whats in our future, i say, live for the time being and pray for a winning lottery ticket!!

i can't explain it but I agree with you. I think people are too obsessed with worrying about their future that they can't enjoy the present, which i think is sad. they're like zombies..

I agree -- we have friends who sign up for year long deployments in war torn countries just to make an extra buck. How stupid! Family first!

Boats, second cars, long vacations -- they aren't worth it if you have to sacrifice time away from your family to pay for them!
