I plan on just taking my laptop and wireless router with me to college. Is it possible for me to just plug the Ethernet cord from the wall directly into my wireless router or do I have to have it plugged into a desktop first?

Like everyone here is saying: unless you really need the wireless, then use a wire - its much faster and more secure.

Your college more than likely threads the whole college through a Server Room, and thats where they pick up the raw connection via Cable Modem and then its fed through the college via CAT5 (Ethernet) wire.

Short answer: depends on your router. If its designed to automatically broadcast the signal from the wall then yes.

Shocked that your College doesnt have wireless set up in the building though. If it was your intention though to bypass your College's server settings then you're out of luck.

You can plug directly into the wireless router and have your wireless signal broadcast from it. In order to have computers networked, you'd need more than one machine, but for just a WiFi connection, it's the wireless router that's the important part.

You don't need to run it through a desktop. If you are going to be living on campus, check to make sure it's OK with the school though. Some schools have prohibitions on wireless routers in the dorms.

What I'm wondering is why you don't just plug the ethernet cable directly into your laptop. A physical connection is infinitely more secure than a wireless one.

if you wanna use wireless connection, then you need to connect the ethernet from the wall to the router but if you're fine with having a wired connection in your laptop then you can connect the ethernet cable directly to your laptop.
