Well I love watching baseball and my brother's fav team is the yanks so I have come to help ur question. You know how the Red Sox are ahead of the Yankees by like 6 games or something? he's probably nervous because the red sox are ahead of him and he wants to be ahead of them. and he could also be afraid if he's gonna make the playoffs or if he's gonna make the wild card. hopes that help u.

That's not all he holds...
jk...I would assume superstition. A lot of athletes have them. I'm sure one day Torre was holding it and he got 4 or 5 hits, something like that. I'm assuming, don't know any of that for a fact.
