Way was born in Summit, New Jersey[1] to Donald and Donna Lee Way; he is of Scottish and Italian descent.[citation needed]. He first began singing in fourth grade, when he played the part of Peter Pan in a school production of the play. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, taught him to sing, paint, and perform and has referred to her in interviews saying 'she has taught me everything I know'.[2]

After graduating from Belleville High School in 1995,[3] he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999.[2] Gerard aspired to be a comic book artist and claimed his favorite comic-book team was the Doom Patrol. His first job in the industry was an internship as a photocopier for DC Comics. In 2001, Way says he tried to sell an animated television series to Cartoon Network.[citation needed]

As Morgyleigh_way said above me, I think he does have some religion, and he is not an athiest. Have you heard his song, "Heaven Help Us"? He talks about Angels and Heaven as if he has a belief in it. I think that Gerard is some sort of a Catholic. ♥

Gerard was raised as a Catholic, I don't know if he's still Catholic. I think he has his own beliefs now.

When he was younger he was forced to a cotholic church and it used to scare him so when he was older he stopped going to church but i think he is still catholic

no, he said he used to be forced to go to catholic church, but it supposedly scared him as a kid. he's not catholic anymore. i believe he is an atheist now.
