Even if there is a war between Iran and America, it won't be "total war." In total war, where everything is on the table and the fight is until one government does away with another, America can get the troops, armaments and money necessary to win (yes, it can always start a draft).
But the reality is that even the neocons don't want total war with Iran, they want air-strikes to cripple the nuclear program. In this case, it could make the gov of Iran stronger, just as it became stronger when Saddam invaded Iran in 1980. Because when bombs are falling on you, people rally around the government --it's natural (think of 9/11 and Bush's approval rating).
Of course, when it comes to air strikes, there is no winner or loser, each side claims victory. The point is, who comes out of it strategically more powerful? In this case, it could very well be the Iranian government. That's why we should really think before acting.

Because of it's century long atrocities that they have committed in the region ,the US has lost the war a long time ago and it is just a matter of time before the US house of cards fall in the region and elsewhere.
The only reason that the US has maintained power in the region is because it has fully supported vile murderous dictatorships and because of this massive support these filthy right wing dictatreship friends of the US have had the wearwithall to suppress their citizens in denying them DEMOCRACY FREEDOM AND LIBERTY.
From 1953 to 1979,the US had it's vile dictator friend the Shah of Iran in power who along with his infamous dreaded Savaak secrete police killed any and all Iranians who even challenged the Shah in a non-violent manner.
Unable to evolve politically in a normal manner ,Iranians were forced (effectively by and because of the US) to seek help from the Islamic whackos who obliged them and soon kicked the vile Shah and the US out of their country whose democratic government was destroyed by the US in 1953..
Iranians in general HATE the US and that hatred is totally justified.
Next and again the US between 1979 - 1990 fully supported militarily, economically and politically the filthy right wing dictator ,the BUTCHER OF BAGDAD even when the world discovered that he had genocided the Kurds .
Have no doubt that under the Iraqi facade they REMEMBER the total support the US gave Saddam and fundamentally hate America.
At the end of Desert Storm ,Bush SR. prodded the southern Sunnis Iranians to revolt against Saddam and promised them the US would help them.
The US LIED and did not help them in their revolt and Saddam slaughtered thousands of them.
Make no mistake the Iraqis hate Americans for all these reasons and more.
Today the US fully supports the filthy dictatorships in both Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
In Saudi Arabia the all powerful Wahhabi Sunnis (a radical arm of Sunnis) could overthrow the Saudi dictatorship at bany time and when they do (not if but when) ,you can be absolutely sure that the Wahhabis hatred of the US will be like that of Iran's.
In Egypt ,the political situation there is simmering under the dictatorship and ant-Americanism is rampant.
In summary, the only thing that allows the US to still have a presence in the Middle East(aside from the US'
s 51st state,Israel) are the remaining DICTATORSHIPS and when they are toppled, hatred for the US throughout the region will be fully released .
And make no mistake,China is fully capitalizing on US atrocities in the region both present and previous and will stand by Iran etc if push comes to shove..
As all good little Christian Americans know from the good Book:
"As you sow ,so shall ye reap"
and it is happening NOW.
and the adages
You live by the sword, you die by the sword
What goes around,comes around.

I would say Europe's of the former USSR. The war will be an air power/ navy duel. Even though the US dose have a lot more stealth aircraft- the Russians have only a couple. We don't have enough to take out their industry in a days- so we will have to really on non stealthy AC. The Russians have a more complex AD network than we do- hence the reason we invested in stealth. In the sea war- the issue that comes to play is will the US be able to get a foot hold at the key choke points- England Gibraltar and the Jutland pininsula. If the Europeans landed in the US I don't think they would make it past apilachia- due to the second admentment. The rednecks and hillbilies would pick off their men. note to R world war I we had the French and British empire world war II Britan and the USSR and more insutrial might.

Iran has no chance against the might of the U.S., but that doesn't mean America will "win." The U.S. is already stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan; another war against a country that, in this case, is a nuclear power, is a recipe for disaster. America would have to institute a draft and actually move to a wartime economy, and it's far from certain that Americans are willing ot make such a sacrifice for another unprovoked, illegal war.

an all out war? America, hands down. At WestSide they don't fool around.. and they tell their cadets that in a true battle royal the US could stand alone against the 3 next strongest militaries in the world. The only reason Iran might survive with minimal damage is because we also have a pretty big heart in this nation.
Now.. a conflict with Iran might spark a larger, more global conflict... if so.. it would depend on how everything stacked up.

Neither side... America could not force the government of Iran to abdicate without occupying that nation... a nation bigger than Texas. We just don't have the troops to do this. Iran could not win because they could never really touch our shores.
This would be the literal outcome. It would probably hurt America worse if there was a cease-fire without a victory because our economy would suffer from engaging that kind of war without a pay off. The world might see Iran as the victor, like they saw Hamas as the victor (over Israel) in Lebanon last year, for standing up to the might of the United States without surrendering.
(And anybody who says we could just "nuke them" are insane... we would be breaking treaties with the rest of the world and American leaders will not want America to be the pariah of the world... at the least, its not good for business)

I'd expect such a conflict to go like Vietnam or Iran: America's military would be initially victorious (though not virtually unopposed as in Iraq), but complete victory would be too slow to please the general public, and the anti-war movement would eventuall pick up enough steam to ensure defeat.

The sad answer is, nobody.
US is crippled by debt and is in constant need of foreign soverign funds/central banks buying/trading in dollars...the dollar will evaporate once the first missle hits the Nuke factories.
Iran is heavily dependent on exporting oil for revenue, and a lot of that goes into subsidizing refined gasoline imports, both of which would cease as no tankers would be getting out of the gulf.
Other countries besides the US and Iran would lose too, as any disruption to the markets in this highly leveraged global economy would be an unmitigated disaster.
Nobody wins this one. At all.

I really don't believe this will happen. A war between I ran and the US would end with no winners, The devastation would be worse than any of us could imagine. The global ramifications would be dire. Add to this the fact Bush/Cheney have damaged our military. It will take at minimum 2 years to repair equipment, rebuild the troops, and redeploy.
