The tires kinda spin for a second and the whole front end of the car seems to slide to one side or the other. It feels like the car is hydroplaning, only the road is dry--or at least that's the best way I can explain it. The steering is also kind of loose and jerky, and I'm pretty sure the two problems are related. Any ideas?

Have the suspension checked. It sounds like it is worn out. There may be a lot of problems with it. The steering box, tie rod ends, ball joints worn, wheel bearings. Who knows. I do know that it is unsafe, and your room mate needs to have it fixed or replace the car.

"yes they are. since your vehicle is probably front wheel drive, the tires will try to spin because there is no weight on them "

What?...The engine and transmission of the car are directly over the wheels how can there be no weight on them?

Get the front end checked out before you kill someone. If the car is moving on its own it is a safety hazard to you and others around you.
