computer will power on and off but nothing works. the computer just shut off and upon powering back up the monitor is blank (off)

Could be a dead LCD. See if you still have a warrantee on the system. if so get the LCD replaced.

Could also be a short on the board due to the fact it's just shutting off. Check your battery power. Perhaps the card that handles your AC connection is not functioning and your battery has no power. Again if this is the case check with MAC about repairs.

Put in the original MacOS X CD/DVD that came with the MacBook. Start up holding down the "c" key. The computer will start up from the disk. You can tell then if you have hardware or software problem. If it's hardware, take it to an Apple store and they'll fix it for you (usually free). If it's software, do a Clean install of MacOs X from the DVD.

you should probably reinstall OS X from the CD and bring it to the genius bar at the apple store. they'll tell you everything.

Ebay that pile and buy a cheap PC.

most probably your logic board is bad, have it replaced if its under applcare warrantee
