the older Malibu,s are nice, what you may have a problem with is actually finding one of these old cars in good condition, there's not many around that can be bought at a reasonable price,so when you go looking be careful, and look one over real good, some cars you might think is a good deal may not be,parts for some of the older cars are hard to find and expensive when you do find them, there's still out there though but the people that own these old cars know there worth some money,so be careful and don't over -pay for one, good luck on it.

Go with what you love and make it your own. I knew a kid in my high school that drove a Chevy Vega...other kids would make fun of him, saying a Vega is not a collector and what not, but he loved them. Now there are Vega clubs and I bet he's still happy with what he's driving.
My advice: keep it clean and don't spend more on the wheels than you spend on the rest of the car. It is so shameful to see someone with a $500 car on $2500 wheels; and the car is rusty, dirty, noisy, and breaks down. That's just sad.

Fair warning...
The 80s were not Detroit's finest hour...
The cars were soft and computer controls were in their infancy.
Move back into the 70s when cars had caraburetors instead of electronic fuel injection.
