My back on one side (left) is hurting very badly. The pain is constant and at time it feels like a hot poker sticking in me. The pain doesn't go away no matter what I do. It does help to apply the heating pad for a while. I don't have a fever, chills or anything like that. It doesn't burn to use the bathroom. What do you think it is?

it could be a slight Kidney infection. drink lots of cranberry juice. if it is more towards the bum it could be your siatica. try some light stretching lay on your back 1 leg straight other bent and cross bent one over straight 1 do other side. hug both knees to chest and rock genitally back and forth.

Remote diagnosis is bad. I could offer a suggestion. If the pain travels down through your left leg to your big left toe, it could be a pinched sciatic nerve. It is from your spinal cord down your lower back where it branches off down to both big toes. Usually it pinches right in the upper hips on one side or the other.

What you can try is putting something like pillows under your legs at night to raise them to a point where your lower back is flush with the bed, not curved. If the pain is reduced, that is probably the problem.

Cold compresses first to reduce the inflammation before heat to heal helps as well.

I had a problem similar where I had pain just on my left side area, was actually my bottom on down into my leg. For me I had apparently irritated my sciatic nerve. Not sure how, but my joke was don't irritate your sciatic nerve or it will turn around & bite you in the butt. I would suggest going to a doctor to find out what is wrong. Because it might be something one of us answerers think it could be or it could be something entirely different. I ended up telling my chiropractor about it & they took care of it for me & adv me what I could do & take for it. But if it is kidney stones or something else you would need dif kind of DR than a chiropractor.

Could be a pulled muscle. Probably should apply ice instead of heat at first. If it lasts more than a few days, go to the doctor. Could be kidney stones which I understand are quite painful or female problems.

In the meantime, drink a lot of water.

Could be an ovarian cyst. See your OB/GYN.
