How come it is always men with multiple wives? Why can't women have multiple husbands? After all most women are multi-orgasmic. After they finish with one guy they could move on to the next.

all of you are driving me crazy with the " why is it always the man with all the wives why can't the women have multiple partners too?" WE can. Yes it is illegal, should it be legal, yes. With so many people out there cheating on their significant other and not keeping their comittment then why shouldn't it be legal to love and take care of multiple people, most poly folk don't have affairs outside of the home, like others do. I know of plenty of poly relationships where there are both men with multiple women and women with multiple men, In utah i'm sure they are all for religious purposes, but in other sates and countries its just a way of life and not always a spiritual reason for it. We never get up in arms against famous people for having 3-8 marriages in their life time but it they were married to all those people at one time then they would be kicked out of hollywood. I 'm sure all of you answering this question have loved more than one person, so why can't you love them all at one time?

I watch the show Big Love, a series on HBO and I sort of find it entertaining but I think its alot heinous. I mean the husband has the say in taking on other wives and such. Luckily enough that the man guy on there talked it over with his first wife first. But still I think it would be too much. Because for one guy to want 3 or 10 women nagging at him and all the kids running around. It woudl just be too much in my view. Because you have to over work to feed everyone. And one of the wives is always ending up pregnant. And with such a large family there is just so much freaking secrecy. And the fact that the husband can only claim marriage to one wife in certain areas that are farther away from where they usually live. I just think its really neurotic on someone's part to go through all that confusion, having to work like a pack mule to provide for that many family members and still be nagged like all the time.

Mind you I'm not saying its wrong either if someone wants to take on all that burden and responsibility. I say go for what you know. Because usually people that do that, have grown up in that environment and to them some of the ordinary people's ideas are harsh or more disturbing than theirs. As for if I were asked to do it, I wouldn't be able to. Because for me personally I just like to have one guy and just me and our kids. Not two other women getting to have sex with my husband and having their kids run around my yard and such. Just not real easy to accept sharing in that intimate an environment.

I think there's enough challenges in keeping a healthy relationship going with just ONE wife. I can't begin to imagine handling issues w/ several women at once.

As for Hef and the girls - that's a ridiculous example. That's not a "real" relationship. That's a rich old fart buying the attention and time of 3 young girls (all of which will eventually be tossed aside when they get - older like more than 35).

Your other examples of Islam and other posters ideas about Mormons aren't really good examples either. In those societies, the wife's role is to be extremely subservent to their husband. I bet if you asked Muslim women in such a situation (and they could give a truthful answer without fear of being stoned to death) most would object to their status as second class to their husband.

I just don't think it works in a Western - post women's lib type society. And that's not exactly a bad thing :)

I guess it depends on the people involved, if they're okay with it and it works for them, then all the more power to them. Personally, I don't think I could handle it, guess I'm too possessive about one husband already, I don't think I could hang in there with 2, 3 or 4 and forget about sharing him with other "wives" that would drive me insane or homicidal.

Holly, Kendra and Bridget are not good role models for ANY woman! Hugh Hefner is an exploiter of women who have no self esteem and no life outside of their surgically fixed bodies. They're blow up dolls! I can't tell you if polygamy is good or not. If one man thinks for one second he can actually keep more than one woman happy, I'd like to meet that man. Most men don't have it in them to please one woman!

Sure, it can work within a cultural framework that condones it. People in polygamous societies are probably wondering if monogamy can work. DOES it work? Looking at today's western culture, one would have to say - not very well. I don't think there's a damn thing wrong with polygamy, monogamy or anything in between. One is as valid as the other.

If the people are happy in a polygamous sitauation, then I think it could work and is just fine.

If any one of the people involved are not entirely happy, there will be drama.

I think polygamy should not be illegal in this country. I think that polygamy being illegal is a violation of religious freedom and that the government needs to get out of our bedrooms and let consenting adults do as they see fit with their lives.

Personally, I am too jealous and possessive for a polygamous relationship. If my husband wanted more than one wife, I would be jealous and wonder if he loved me and was satisfied with me. If my husband offered to let me have more than one husband, I would wonder if he loved me and how he could share me with another man.

you may look at it biologically, and historical guy did. adult adult males have 3 organic and organic drives - shop the visagoths from the cave front, deliver abode a sabertooth tiger on social amassing, and get as many women folk pregnant as obtainable. For 10,000 years all cultures popular polygamy as a life-variety. it became carried out plenty in yet in any different case than today. a guy have been given married and someplace down the line whilst he desperate he needed yet another spouse he made a call, however the 1st spouse made the suited determination, no longer him. If she cherished the hot lady then it became ok, if she did no longer he had to maintain looking. today interior the polygamous sects the adult adult males make all the thoughts and tension the different better halves to settle for his selection. All of that replaced approximately one thousand years in the past whilst the church compelled their theory of marriage on society on the element of a sword. They compelled married couples to have intercourse purely for procreation, you may desire to no longer have it for relaxing, and you had to have a clergyman modern for it. approximately that element they authorized all the brothels to the church and made pre-marital intercourse a sin, they have been dropping out on some income if human beings had intercourse outdoors of marriage or a brothel. Former catholic now psychological semi-atheist.

I don't think that it's right. For example, a woman can't have multiple husbands, but a man can have many wives. It's sexist. Not only that, but the idea of marriage is that you will love that person with all your heart. You can't love 4 people with all your heart. You would be slpiting your love 4 ways, and that is not fair to anyone. One can make that argument that a woman or a man can love all 5 of their children, but the counter to that is that kind of love is a maternal or paternal love. You're not IN love with your children. You ARE supposed to be IN love with your spouse, and it doesn't work unless it's one and one.

Personally I couldn't make a relationship like that work...I like my man to myself. I can imagine it working if that is all one knew, if they were raised to think that kind of thing was okay and to be able to look past a pesky little thing like the law...since it is illegal.
In Saudi a man can have more than one wife as long as all have the same things...same houses, furniture...blah blah blah. Their culture finds nothing wrong with this type of set up.
As for Hugh Heffner...he isn't married to any of his bunnies. Their relationships are purely sexual...(barfing).
To each his own right???
