Most definitely cricket has been instrumental in putting India on the world map. Developed countries like South Africa, England and Australia play cricket. When we tour these countries the local media highlights Indian cricket team. This indirectly makes our country India famous. Also many dignitaries and politically important people come to watch cricket matches being played. Cricket has already done a significant job in bridging up differences between India and Pakistan. You may be aware that recently Daniel Radcliffe lined up to take Sachin's autograph. All this is because Cricket has made Indian cricketers and India popular.

Not many other than common wealth countries play or know
about the game of Cricket. India has been on the world map
centuries back and has been ever present in the old civilizations to current day. It existence will continue.
Cricket or any other sport has anything to do for India to be
on the world map. Recently (10+ years) the people and
government has changed the policies and has vast number
of technical graduates and with the new policies, India has
emerged strong. It has trying to become modernization, but
with it comes the cultural conflicts. With the IT sector very
strong and manufacturing picking at vast pace and add the
cheap manual labor....it is going to excel.

Cricket did not put India on the world map. Only the countries that play cricket came to know more about India.
But.. tourists and businessmen who visited India from all over the world would have come to know that there is a game called Cricket and Indians attachment to it.

i dont think Cricket put India on the world map anymore than Hockey or Football did.
mainly because we have not done really well except against poor teams and the occasional fluke wins.
what really put India on the world map was the IT/ITES industry.
but cricket did put our cricketers among the richest people.

In fact cricket has brought shame to India and not any praise. India's phenomenal growth has been onoly due to IT professionals and individuals. Cricket has brought billions to BCCI but what has it done to put India in the world map? Are you not ashamed to say that Cricket has brought laurels to India, when India cannot even beat bangladesh in the world cup? Are you not ashmaed that mafia gangsters are running the sport and how can they bring laurtels to India. Please salute the greats like Narayana Moorthy, Tatas, Reliance etc.

It's not just a single issue country is put forward by the facts which we are not able to think too...
eg. latest discoveries of oil mines in India...
we don't know what may happen the next minute..
Cricket may have played a role but less than a percent..
