they may or may not use a vaginal probe to try and get a picture up on the screen, but the the chances are they will try first by using the scanner on your lower abdomen , at around six weeks you will probably see only a very tiny gray blob but they may be able to pick up a hart beat, and they show you the tiny flicker on screen... its a very exciting time for you... good luck, also try not to worry too much if they tell you to come back next week,if your really early into pregnancy, they may want to get a get picture as it may be too early to see much.

It will be an intravaginal ultrasound. They use a device that kinda looks like a tampon with a cord that attaches it to the machine (instead of the regular hand held one that goes on your belly) its inserted only about an inch or so into your vagina to get the best view of the tiny uterus and baby inside.
There might be a heartbeat that you can see at this point. Basically it will just look like a sac and a bean. They'll take little measurements on the screen and decide how are along you are.
This is about what you'll see. This is my 8 week ultrasound.

It is going to be a transvaginal ultrasound. It is really uncomfortable. A bunch of the ultrasound goo goes on the wand they stick inside of you and they move it around to get the best view of the baby. Expect tears, you wont believe how moving it is to actually hear your babies heartbeat! Expect to NOT know what you are looking at..it doesnt look like a baby right now, it looks like a tadpole..or an ant or something...Oh i know what it looks like..a glow worm! But it is still very exciting because pregnancy doesnt really feel "real" until you can feel them kick, or until you see the belly...now it is just exciting because it feels more real!
They should print some pics for you too!
Edit...Edminstonlee person is wrong! You cannot see a profile, they do NOT look like a baby at all at 6 weeks!

I went for a scan at 6 weeks, 4days and my doctor said, "there is your baby"! All I could see was the heartbeat...later when I got home I saw the baby! It was too cute...I had a side profile and I could make out the face with a little nose and everything!
If you don't see a heartbeat try not to panic...as long as everything else looks good you should be fine. If they can't find a heartbeat, they may have you come back a week later.
**EDIT** Actually Cherise... you can see it! Just because you didn't see that doesn't mean I haven't. I actually took it back to my doctor to ask if my eyes were playing tricks on me and she told me "that's is exactly what I was pointing out when I said there is your baby".
You can see on the ultrasound the crl measurement from the top of the head to the little bottom...the crl was 0.7cm...and yes you can see the profile! I love it another one of these negative b*tches that thinks she knows everything and if it doesn't happen to her, then it can't possibly happen to anyone else!

that's strange that you're going at 6 weeks cause most docs won't want to see u till at least 8 weeks. that's because, most enmryos cannot be seen at 6 weeks. remember, YOU are 6 weeks but the baby is 2 weeks less, so she's 4 weeks.
a 4 week old embryo, i mean, they may be able to see it's sack, but when i went that early, there was nothing there. they thought i had an ectopic pregnancy, but then they did tell me that i went too early.
u should really wait till 8 weeks so at least u can see a heart beat and all.

they will do the vaginal ultrasound..they insert the scanner into you so they can see the "sac" (s) you might be able to see the babys heartbeat on the ultrasound too..that is exciting!!
the main reason for this appt is that they want to determine that you are only having one, and to make sure that they and you are correct about your due-date..
Congrats!!!

Nothing to worry about. They will want your bladder full. You basically lie on a table and the technician will put a gel on your stomach. This will be cold. The technician basically has what I would call a mouse (like your computer mouse) and will move this across your stomach. You will be able to see images of your baby usually just the heart beat at this stage. Nothing to it. Congratulations and good luck.

Gooby gel (hopefully that will warm it for you), some pressure, emotions and hopefully a heart beat - I remember just crying a ton - and I don't cry - it is an amazing thing what they can do with technology -

You'll answer alot of questions, and you'll take a urine sample or you'll have a little blood drawn. Then they'll send you home with a follow up in six weeks.
