yes it started only after 1983 ,indians won the world cup,...by great kapil dev

religion-like status? Does it deserve it?

may be not now ,...but when Kapil faced Loyed's mighty windies
like Ranathunga met Tailers' invincibles in world cup...
it deserved that status,
what happened to Dravid in 2007?
religion-like status? Does it deserve it?
we see the answer is NO, not now may be after new genaration of young cricketers imerging in India....
yes may be ....

current fans desperately believe Dravid or Tendulkar
may win it again for them, as a matter of fact,...
Dravid or sachin is not even near kapil's great all rounding capabilities. Kapil Dev is one in a life time player, why cant some fans understand it, ....players who seek personal glory
will never come close to victorious level,.. they only pass
personal milestones....one after the another .
But this RILLIgion concept is never be generalised by
avarage players like DRAVID. look what happened in England, first one dayer.

I would say cricket enjoyed a religion-like status till recently, now Tennis, football, hockey are catching up. The TRP of cricket matches have fallen a lot in the last few years and this definitely shows cricket although still the most popular game in India is slowly losing out. In the next few years as Sachin, Ganguly, Dravid are poised to retire in quick succession I guess cricket will slowly but surely lose the religion like status.

Boss, cricket is a great day-passing game. So, the religion-like status has been imposed by ourselves. You know one the reasons India is still in developing countries list and not a developed country after 60 years of independence, is Cricket. We are pouring millions of working-hours on discussions about cricket which is a criminal waste of time. If you see, right now you are also becoming a part of that by reading this answer

Well India don't have anyother sports which have a national appeal like cricket. For a Brazilian, Argentinian it is football so on and so forth. Hockey, volley ball , football etc are given cold shoulder by most.

Ancient Roman emperors used Gladiatoral sport to distract the masses from the real issues facing the country.
It is as old as Rome itself and may be more.

Pseudo-Nationalism is the key in my opinion. The nationalistic fever that is attached to sport gives the masses their kick and so it would seem anti Indian to not support the Indian team. The frevour drummed up by the media adds to the flavour.

We turn into Indians only when cricket is being played, we forget to be Indians when millions are starving or are ravaged by Tsunami etc.

How does it affect any Indian directly if Tendulkar is not playing well one day or Mohammed Kaif is not selected in the team when his absense is so much telling on the field performance. It dose not affect anyone but we are all involved since we have nothing better to do.

Every one and his uncle has an opinion on why a given day one person who performed so well has not done justice to his talent or opportunity given while loosing.

Heros one day and villans the next. Time and money lost to india's economy while watching the match priceless.

Cricket is a big junk which has very high value in India.
All the cricket players know how to play nicely but they will not play when the time comes due to so many reasons, 1, 2, 3, etc.
But people go to temples and do puja's for Indian victory without performance; Is it possible?
Indians instead of bringing World Cup Indians bring Old Cups manufactured during the year 1983.

Cricket lovers worships cricket in India. But the number of worshippers has come down after the betting incidents brought into light. But people pay more importance to cricket than other sports because, Cricket game is played for 9 to 5 unlike other sports which lasts 3 hours and short time, so the the waiting period for the final result is quite long .
Other than that media is giving more importance to the player because of their popularity and give them celebrity status. If u look deep into Board of control for cricket India BCCI, there is lot of money involved , so politicians are very much interested and involved , where there is cricket there is money and there is politician. so
This one particular game has received enormous popularity , sponsors , and money so may be you are right , It has religion like status..But at least cricket brings people together from all walks of life...but i have also seen many Muslims in India who lack sportsmanship and radical support Pakistan and celebrate their victory !! It is a shame
I want to ask you one thing , I have seen that Pakistani cricket team performing namaj on the ground during cricket ? tell me why- is that an advertisement of their religion? No other team does like that

Deserve or not it is going to stay there for quite a time to come. No other game is so absorbing to the laymen audiences who need not know much of the technicalities but partake the trials and tribulations of the Indian team. If it is not for this fanaticism / addiction the matches being played should have been fully boycotted after the team's miserable failure in the last World Cup in West Indies
