It's called diagnosis. It sounds however like you are alluding to diagnosis made by looking at a person. There is Oriental Facial Diagnosis, Iridology (aka Sclerology), Tongue Diagnosis, Palm Diagnsis, and many, many others. Many healers can also diagnose by the sound of your voice, your smell, the way your face looks, your hair, your ears, the taste of your urine (This particular method is used in Tibetan Medicine a LOT!), a tuning fork, a process called Applied Kinesiology, and by feeling your pulses. Many healers also can diagnose by the way you "feel". This would be called an energetic or intuitive read. Everything about you is there for anyone to see, as long as they're paying attention and know what to look for. Was there anything else you'd like to know or were unsure about? There is a book called You Are All Sanpaku that will teach you about Oriental Facial Diagnosis. It's a fascinating science!

Poor lamb, I'm so sorry she's suffered this way. It sounds like she's found someone who really cares about her - that's very important. : ) The stomach trouble sounds like acid reflux. Medications are often how Dr.s try to attack this, but I've had better luck cutting down on caffeine and sugar. Other things to try: ginger tea can help with nausea a great deal. So can mint tea. Might want to visit an herbalist or a traditional Chinese medicine Dr. - I think some times these types of healers can suggest things that are gentler than prescription meds (and if there ever was a person who deserved a little gentleness...) With regards to the ankles, here are some things I would try: whenever possible sit or lie down with her feet raised above her heart. I would also try glucosamine chondriatin to see if it gives her any relief - it is one of the building blocks of cartilage and has been shown to help pain from arthritis and wear to the joints. I don't know what your financial situation is, but if you can afford to, a masseur, a chiropracter or an accupuncturist might be able to help you. My mother has had a great deal of success controlling pain from arthritis & cancer with accupuncture. Even if you can't afford this kind of thing, some gentle "home made" massage may help. I think you can't underestimate the strength of the mind/body connection. Someone who is in emotional pain will not just feel it in their mind and heart, but in their body as well. When looking for a healer, look for someone who not only has it together factually/professionally, but also someone approachable and sympathetic who makes her feel comfortable. It may be important for her physical recovery for her to be able to talk at length about what happened to her, and learn some ways to grow past it in order to really feel better.

Do you mean finding the simillimum? (The signs and symptoms that match up with a particular remedy.)
I am a qualified homoeopath (not practicing) and I have just started studying nursing. Nurses use exactly the same approach to case-taking that we were taught as homoeopaths. Interesting, hey? Constitutional prescribing has prepared me well for good nursing documentation.
In the college that I learned homoeopathy we used regular medical diagnostic techniques, eg:
- observation (eg watching the person's face, gait, balance, etc)
- palpation (eg using hands to feel the abdomen, etc)
- percussion (eg tapping the back of the chest to determine lung consolidations in pneumonia), and
- ausculation (eg listening to people's chest with a sphygmometer). As a homoeopath, we were taught when to get blood tests done, too.
Finding the homoeopathic similimum involves complete and thorough assessment techniques, not just "looking at someone" and being able to tell what is wrong with them.

It's called symptomatology. If you mean looking at your eyes then it is called iridology/sclerology.

it's still diagnosis, no matter if it's homeopathy or naturopathy or allopathy. you just treat them differently.
