The Privacy Act of 1974 protects private information about citizens and is designed to protect that data from abuse by government agencies. The Freedom of Information Act allows citizens to gain access to government documents which do not reveal classified information, compromise personal privacy of citizens, reveal trade secrets, and interfere with law enforcement. There are a few more criteria that information can fall into and be exempt from the FOIA.
