and then it turned out that the person killed was innocent?

While there have been no proven cases, there have been executions where there are serious questions about the guilt of the executed. You can research them here:

Look to the state of Illinois. Everyone on death row had their sentence changed by the governor because of the EXTREMELY high # of innocent people put to death.

There have been no proven cases, usually since after the sentence is carried out, the physical evidence is disposed of.
