There are different types, but they all kill a tiny human being:
1. The fetus is destroyed with surgical instruments through the cervix.
2. The fetus is killed with chemicals or drugs or saline infection and then evacuated from the womb or born dead.
You can pictures and information here http://www.lifesite.net/abortiontypes/
"Suction Aspiration" is the most common procedure done and before 12 weeks gestation. The mother is quickly dilated. A suction curette (hollow tube with a knife-edged tip) is inserted into the womb. This instrument is then connected to a vacuum machine by a transparent tube. The vacuum suction, 29 times more powerful than a household vacuum cleaner, tears the fetus and placenta into small pieces which are sucked through the tube into a bottle and discarded.

It depends on how far along you are and which method you would like. Very early pregnancies can be ended by pills, called medication abortion. The first pill will shut off the flow of hormones and nutrients to the fetus and the second will cause contractions to empty the contents of the uterus. Most other pregnancies within the first trimester can be ended by a D&E, dilation and evacuation. In this procedure, the doctor will dilate the cervix first. This can be done through medication, inserting different sized rods, or inserting a stick of seaweed. After the cervix is dilated, a thin tube with vacuum attachment is inserted and turned on. This effectively empties the uterus. Scraping of the uterus is no longer used which has served to make abortions safer than ever before.
For later abortions, other methods are used but it is safer and cheaper to end the pregnancy early.
There are two online workbooks available that you can look through: http://www.pregnancyoptions.info/pregnant.htm and http://www.pregnancyoptions.info/whichmethod.htm .
Best of luck!
Peace,
Jenn
PS. Saline abortions have not been used since the 1970s. If you have any more questions, just let me know.

Nobody is going to force doctors to perform abortions. I've never heard anyone until you propose such a thing. What will happen when the conscience clause is overturned is that a lot of pious pharmacists who know better than patients and doctors what's best for us all are going to have to pony up the birth control. A pharmacist's job is to fill prescriptions. He or she does have to make judgment calls, but these don't include undermining the doctor's intentions just because those intentions included birth control. Don't like it? Don't be a pharmacist.

It depends on the type of abortion procedure.
For an early abortion (first trimester), usually they perform a vacuum D&C. Sometimes they will give you a sedative to help you relax. They will put these little stick things called "laminaria" into your cervix, which cause the cervix to open a little. Then, they scrape the inside of the uterus and use a suction tube to remove the products of pregnancy - the sac, the embryo, fluid, placenta, etc.
The procedure itself usually takes about 15-30 minutes. Afterwards they will monitor your bleeding, and after a couple of hours in recovery you can go home.

Inside the procedure room you will lie on a table and be positioned just like a regular GYN examination. An instrument called a speculum is placed inside your vagina and adjusted to hold the sides apart so that the physician can see directly to your cervix (the opening to your uterus). Another instrument is then used to hold your cervix in place throughout the procedure. Next, your cervix is numbed with local anesthesia (or, if you choose, IV sedation or general anesthesia is administered).
The physician will then gradually widen (dilate) the cervix. When the cervix has been dilated to the width appropriate for your stage of pregnancy, the physician will insert a small tube (cannula) which is attached to a suction machine. The machine’s suction empties the contents of the uterus through the tube. Then the doctor carefully checks the walls of the uterus with a spoon-shaped instrument (curette) to be sure no tissue remains. The entire procedure takes just a few minutes.

I think to receive an honest answer to your question you should do research as far as looking up on web or going to library. Better call your Dr or a planned parenthood ctr and see if they will give you info on it.
But also it depends on how far along you are depends on what kind of abortion will be given. early pregnancy I think will be more like a D&C, after that to be honest I would not want to imagine.

Here it is right from wikipedia:
"In the first twelve weeks, suction-aspiration or vacuum abortion is the most common method. Manual vacuum aspiration, or MVA abortion, consists of removing the fetus or embryo by suction using a manual syringe, while the Electric vacuum aspiration or EVA abortion method uses an electric pump. These techniques are comparable, differing in the mechanism used to apply suction, how early in pregnancy they can be used, and whether cervical dilation is necessary. MVA, also known as "mini-suction" and menstrual extraction, can be used in very early pregnancy, and does not require cervical dilation. Surgical techniques are sometimes referred to as STOP: 'Suction (or surgical) Termination Of Pregnancy'. From the fifteenth week until approximately the twenty-sixth week, a dilation and evacuation (D & E) is used. D & E consists of opening the cervix of the uterus and emptying it using surgical instruments and suction.
Dilation and curettage (D & C) is a standard gynecological procedure performed for a variety of reasons, including examination of the uterine lining for possible malignancy, investigation of abnormal bleeding, and abortion. Curettage refers to cleaning the walls of the uterus with a curette. The World Health Organization recommends this procedure, also called Sharp Curettage, only when MVA is unavailable. The term "D and C", or sometimes suction curette, is used as a euphemism for the first trimester abortion procedure, whichever the method used.
Other techniques must be used to induce abortion in the third trimester. Premature delivery can be induced with prostaglandin; this can be coupled with injecting the amniotic fluid with caustic solutions containing saline or urea. Very late abortions can be induced by intact dilation and extraction (IDX) (also called intrauterine cranial decompression), which requires surgical decompression of the fetus's head before evacuation. IDX is sometimes termed "partial-birth abortion". A hysterotomy abortion is an abortion procedure similar to a caesarean section, and is performed under general anesthesia because it is considered major abdominal surgery. The procedure requires a smaller incision than a caesarean section and is used during later stages of pregnancy.
From the 20th to 23rd week of gestation, an injection to stop the fetal heart can be used as the first phase of the surgical abortion procedure."
I hope anyone who reads this answer notices that I actually answered the question, verses ASSUMED the asker is "going to hell." Through factual information we are enlightened once more.

You lay in the position like you do for an exam,
The doc inserts a really thin tube. Then he inserts one that is a tiny bit bigger, then another and another, until your cervix is dilated enough to put the suction tube in. Then he sucks out the contents of your uterus.
That is the basic idea. The procedure takes 10 minutes. It is painful, and can possibly result with an infection if not properly treated.

well it all depends how far gone u are
you have to be 24 weeks
and under nothing over as it is too late then
if your in the very early stages you will be givingg some tables which will change your hormones to think your no longer pregnant and will just have a period but heavier
but if your a little later
you will have an appointment
and will have 2 take some tables to widen the vagina
and change your hormones
later you will be givin general anaesthetic to be but asleep
and then they use a kind of vacuum to get the baby out
and the blood protecting the baby
you will immediately have a long period and be giving tablets to make sure there are no infections
there are side effects though
hope this is of some help to you

depends on how far along you are. In your 1st trimester they suck the baby out with a little vacuum tube and scrape the lining of your uterus clean, in your 2nd trimester the pull apart the baby limb by limb because its too big to take out at one time. The poor baby is very much alive and can feel pain as early as 3 months. 3rd trimester abortions used to be known as partial birth abortions, I'm not sure if they are still legal. but they would induce labor and when the babies head came out they would stab it in the back of the head and suck the brains out. The idea was that as long as the whole body was not out then it wasn't murder.
