I have been asking the same questions about doctors and dentists - but that's another answer.
First you need to know what type of attorney you need. What is the issue? Selling/buying a house - real estate attorney, injured at work - workers comp attorney, doctor injured you -- medical malpractice/personal injury ......
Ask your friends, family, banker, insurance agent or business associates, or call your local Bar Associations for a referral of an attorney in your area. Once you have a few names google that person.
How do you know if you can "fully trust them" -- how does the attorney know that they can fully trust you? You speak with each other. Trust is a 2 way street.
Hint; don't begin the conversation complaining about how much money you have to pay. We attorneys, like all workers, want to get paid for our work and find it rather insulting for potential clients to complain about costs before they even hear what the costs will be.

After doing 20 months in prison and I had the so called Best of the best and he told me I would never see inside of a prison, and thousands of dollars later, I was sitting in prison. I wouldn't waste my time with the bar association. You need to find someone that has used a certain one and one that will fight for you. And do not pay them the total amount up front. Their already paid, get my point? Won't work as hard. And to all you attorneys out there, I don't see how you sleep at night.

Referral is the best way. Make sure the person whose recommendation you take had multiple contacts with that particular lawyer, and that you have similar needs (divorce attorney might be poor as tax attorney, e.g.)
Ask everyone you know whose opinion you respect. Good Luck!

Check to see what the lawyers specialize in & narrow down the list by the ones that specialize in the type of lawyer you need. You can also check martindale & hubbell's website and it will tell you what rating they have. Lawyers with more experience are rated higher than newer lawyers with less experience. Although usually the more experience the lawyer has the higher the cost might be (this depends on if your case is a case that can be handled hourly or on a contingency basis).

99% of attorneys give the rest a bad name.
Try your local bar association. Or the state attorney general's office.

I suggest this web site:
http://www.avvo.com
This site rates attorneys in several states. Just type in the name & see their rating. If they have had disciplinary action, it will show up.
