Active suicide is when you make an effort to kill yourself, e.g. you shoot yourself, hang yourself, etc.
Passive suicide is when you don't make the effort to stay alive and so in effect let yourself be killed. For example refusing life saving medical treatment. You're not actively killing yourself but you are intentionally putting yourself on a course to death.
Suicidal thoughts can also be classified in the same manner.
eg.
Active suicidal thoughts:
"I want to shoot myself in the head"
Passive suicidal thoughts:
"Life is really worth living"
---------
Addendum
Taking an overdose is active suicide. It's got nothing to do with how violent it is.
In societies where there is a taboo against suicide, it is usually strongest against active suicide. Active suicide is viewed deliberately destroying life whereas in the case of passive suicides the life is seen as ending naturally. It is after all the life saving treatment that is the artificial intervention. I remember a story a couple of months ago about a teenager with cancer who decided to stop having chemo. This meant that she would inevitably die quite soon but she didn't want to spend her remaining time in a hospital away from her family and sick from the chemo side effects. Her coverage in the news was actually quite positive, focusing on how brave she was. Obviously this is very different to the coverage given to active suicides.
Many Christians view suicide as a sin, but most denominations accept passive suicide. For example Jehovah Witnesses refuse blood transfusions.

RE:
What is the difference between passive suicide and active suicide?
I'm doing a reasearch and I wonder if anyone knows the two differences, and maybe sites that talk about the various impacts they have, and how socially the two of them are viewed?

Active Suicide is when you take action to kill yourself. Passive Suicide is when you get so depressed, you stop taking life saving medications and/or prescription drugs. You are tired of making an effort to stay alive.

Active Suicide is when you take action to kill yourself. Passive Suicide is when you get so depressed, you stop taking life saving medications and/or prescription drugs, like a diabetic who quits taking his insulin. You are just tired of making an effort to stay alive. You don't take care of your health and put yourself in danger of dying. You don't make the effort to buckle your seat belts. Your overall attitude is if I die I die, if live I live. Whatever. Those less violent activities, such as overdosing, gassing, and drowning are also considered active suicide. The suicidal person is taking an action to kill themselves. Passive suicide is where the person puts down their resistance to death and lets nature or chance take its course. They are just tired of putting out an effort to live.

"Death by cop". Have you heard that term? Sometimes when a person has had it up to here, doesn't know what to do, has no one to turn to, they just want to give up. One way of doing this is to p__s off a cop, aim a finger (water pistol, even a real gun) at the cop, who will be more than willing to shoot the person to death. (Look at that guy in Denver, "I am the emperor..." That would be one form of "passive suicide". Another would be to agree with a doctor for surgery that is not really necessary... (Especially at the VA! One guy went in for a colonoscopy and died from that!)
Active suicide is putting a gun to your head, knowing the gun is loaded, the safety is off, and what would happen by pulling the trigger.
As to how society perceives the two, it all depends, mostly on how well they know the individual, or how they perceive the individual (such as believing that a person is homeless, could get no help, etc.)
Society often thinks "it is for the best", showing they have no idea of suffering.

Euthanasia is killing people whether they want to die or not. Medical assisted suicide is helping someone who wants to die to achieve their goal.

Active suicides are usually more violent, hanging, shooting, jumping and so on, they are very swift, and there is little time for anyone to interrupt and little time for the person to reconsider, these are usually the people who want to die, and want to die quick. Passive suicide are less violent and take more time, such as overdosing, gassing, and drowning, these are not always successful, as there is time for intervention or for the person to reconsider. Often times this is done by people who have depression along side another mental illness. Socially it's more shocking when there is an active suicide, and more grief for a passive suicide. More people feel sorry for someone who died with an overdose than someone who blew their brains out. The shock value is also much greater for active suicides as there are more physical effects.

i am not an expert but i studied psychology once at collage. the passive suicide it is the suicide one resorts to when he feels life empty and that no body loves him , it is the suicide of weak. on the other hand the active one is that when one does something he is pretty sure it will kill him yet he does it for something like rescuing his lover or defending his country.
