Traditionally Republicans believed in small government that did not invade the privacy of individuals. They believed in lower taxes, a strong national defense... but NOT involving ourselves in foreign conflicts.

Traditionally Democrats believed in unionization, a certain degree of socialization that might benefit elderly people and children, and the right of citizens not to be spied on by government.

Liberals are a category that can be both democratic or republican. Conservatives, likewise, may be in either party... this called a spectrum of political belief.

There are, currently very few real conservatives... the people that you may identify as Bush supporters are not exactly true Republicans, in that they have no problem with government intruding in our private lives. This is because of the influence of the Christian right and corporations in our current system.

There are also very few self described liberals... because the word has been made dirty by relentless propaganda.

Some "Liberal" beliefs:
Universal Suffrage (right to vote for women and minorities).
Equal pay for equal work.
Racial discrimination against the law.

Some Conservative beliefs:
Less government intervention in personal lives.
Private industry is more efficient than govt.

Note: These are not based on party. Many republicans and democrats cross over the liberal/conservative boundaries.

LOWER taxes for the very poor, and

I believe in a good quality of basic/standard services for everyone. I believe in checks and balances that have oh so slowly been erroded away at the highest level.

Call me liberal, democrat, republican, I don't care. These are MY beliefs.

**Republicans believe in smaller government, low taxes, oppose abortion on religious or moral grounds, oppose the legal recognition of same sex marriage, and favor faith-based initiatives. They support welfare benefit reductions and oppose racial quotas, and are generally dubious of the desirability of affirmative action for women and minorities.
**Democrats supports Equal Opportunity for all Americans regardless of sex, age, race, sexual orientation, religion, creed, or national origin, favor civil unions for same-sex couples, believe that all women should have access to birth control, and supports public funding of contraception for poor women, pro-choice, opposes attempts to reverse the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which declared abortion to be a Constitutionally-protected right, support for all stem cell research with federal funding.
**Liberals emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity, freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy, free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of all citizens are protected, support universal education, and many also support welfare, including benefits for the unemployed, housing for the homeless, and medical care for the sick, all supported by progressive taxation

There you go. I hope that was helpful :)

Don't listen to what people say. See what they ACTUALLY do when they get into office.

Democrats raise taxes. That's all they do. The last democrat to cut taxes? JFK in 1962.
