I have a car and my wife is the cosigner. She does not have a license and she is not on my insurance. She said she is going to take my car tomorrow to go to work. She has done this before and I call the police and they say there is nothing they can do b/c she is a cosigner and she owns half of the vehicle. I do not want car to be wrecked and her get pulled over and then they impund it. What do I do to keep her off the road and out of my car so none of this happens? I am in Ga.

I tell the police that she has no license and that she is not on my insurance.

It is the registration not the loan document that determines who is a registered owner of the vehicle. However, if you live in a community property state the car is half hers because of that.

If my wife was so disrespectful to me and the law I would have serious second thoughts about why she is my wife.

Well, there are some things that you didn't explain like why doesn't she have a license? Is it possible for you to refinance the car in your name only? Those would be the easiest solutions. If she gets a license then you can add her to the insurance and all is well.

It sounds like there isn't a very good relationship between you two or she would be willing to listen to your concerns. The state I live in excludes any drivers in the house that are not listed on the insurance. That means that if she took the car and did have a wreck there would be no coverage at all. There can also be some question as to whether or not there would be coverage if she was breaking the law (ie. driving without a license) and had an accident. You might check with your insurance co. and see if that is the case in GA. She might listen if she knew that any damages to the car or anyone/any thing else would come directly out of your pocket books.

As a last resort, you could sell the car and use public transport. Obviously not the easiest solution but it would be effective.

Go to the DMV and remove her name from the title. Did you tell the police that she did not have a license? That should put them on alert. The bad thing is all the trouble she gets into comes out of your joint account.

Improve your credit and get her name off as cosigner. Pay for the car yourself.
