Charge them more. If they stay you make money, if they leave you don't lose and they are someone elses problem.

There are cases where one should keep unprofitable clients if you have a special relationship with them or they bring you lots of other profitable business.

If I understand you correctly, you are either asking how to make unprofitable clients worthwhile financially, or how to get rid of them.

Getting rid of them is easy, you refer them to your competition, who will probably find a way to make them profitable.

You make them profitable with some straight talk. You explain to them point blank that on a strictly financial basis, they cost you money. Then you ask them if they like the service they get, if they appreciate what you do for them. If they don't, then the relationship isn't working out for either of you, and you send them down the road, but usually they will admit that they do appreciate the service. Then all you have to do is to explain to them that referrals are the highest form of praise anyone can give you.
