This debate is pointless since both are forms animation and it's basically the same techniques used to produce both of them, techniques invented by the French and perfected by the Americans and used today by the Japanese. But some people don't see it that way because they are ignorant.

CARTOONS KICK @SS!

How can anyone compete with Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, Robert McKimson, Seth MacFarlane, Max and Dave Fleischer, John Kricfalusi, Matt Groening, and the greatest of all William Hanna and Joseph Barbera?!

Yes the are quite the same technique...however the figures are different from one another, the backrounds, the music, etc. I watch both, anime and cartoons. The animes, well basically more Asian looking. The cartoons, a bit more realistic. Look at The Simpsons...the shape of their faces, their skin colors. Look at the Smurfs....blue bodies. Look at Pokeman or Sailor Moon...Asian characters, some of them you can't see their eyes, their nose are very small, pointy. Although they're the same technique, but the way it is made is what brings the debate over what's better...to me..neither anime or cartoon is better...two different things with same techniques.

Not totally pointless. Pointy chin vs across the board character design. Think of any anime vs say the Simpsons or Family Guy. Not everyone enjoys Anime designs even though the Anime cartoons usually are much more detailed oriented.

In one aspect is is kind of a pointless argument though since most American cartoons have been made in Japan since the 80's. Although, the character designs for most of them, like the Simpsons, are American.

I completly agree with you! This has been a source of debate the past few days and SOME people (who shall remain nameless) refuse to listen to anyone who says anime and cartoons are the same thing.
My childhood heroes were Goku from DBZ and Spiderman. I didn't care where they originated from and I still don't. Quality animation is quality animation, regardless of where it comes from. (and that goes for comics too.)

And it's not the anime nerds that are saying anime is a different art form. I'm an anime nerd, and I'd never say that. It's the anime SNOBS that are to blame for that.

Anime is more heartfelt and less inane and mindless like normal cartoons.

Sadly, American dub companies such as 4kids corporate the mindless parody of cartoons into the anime (AKA: YGO GX and Shaman King). And 'dumb in down' for younger audiences.

But the original anime is still better. They have better plots (really, are Spongebob and Patrick, or Timmy Turner REALLY doing anything? Atleast Danny Phantom is getting somewhere!), better animation, and even if they do have low-quality animation, they still have better games, and better storylines that make the watcher stay in their seat.

It's not really about the animation quality, it's about the way the characters and shows themselves are announced. I agree with mannyg2199 completely.

But cartoons are sometimes a good sense of comedy, so I give that points too.

Anime is the JAPANESE word for Animation, and is specifically used to differentiate between the garbage normally produced in the US (hence usually called craptoons) and the high quality work produced in Japan.

Yes, I agree. Tell it to "Greed". Hopes he read this. But then again, he won't listen because he's as stubborn as a mule. Frankly, I'm not fastitious. I've grown up with cartoons so even though anime is cool right now, I'm not about to insult cartoons or say which one is better than the other. Both have their own uniqueness.

Seeing as Anime, in it's original Japanese usage is just a shorthand form of Animation, which covers Computer Graphics, Claymation, and all forms of cartoons, I have to go with that, because of the greater range of options.

the bigger debate is overall which is better, which would be Anime.

better storylines, better relationships, much better humor and better character development.

the techniques and artwork doesnt matter as much as the actual story.

any videogame can look awesome but if lacks depth then its worthless, the same goes for cartoons and anime.

but ya i see your point. the artwork is like like comparing apples to well......apples haha

but i rather watch an anime where there is more adult humor then seeing sponge bob and patrick laughing like morons. still a funny cartoon though lol

Rockos modern life may be the greatest cartoon ever though!

Boom goes the Dynamite!
