Much of the uploading activity you see is checksum comparisons between your computer and the source computer to confirm that each part of the download has been received exactly as it was sent.

If there is a discrepancy then the source computer will resend until it gets to your computer without errors or it just gives up and tells you to try again later or try another server.

No, can't say I've ever wondered about it at all. I use a program that shows exactly what's being uploaded from my computer and I control exactly what folder it's uploaded from. It's up to you to be safe. Just thinking that everything is okay is not good enough. That's why we answer a thousand spyware and virus questions a week.
