I'm assuming the actual supplies wouldn't be too expensive, but the labor would be the killer...

You are correct. A 100 amp Homeline breaker panel with a few breakers will cost you about $100.

If the electrician is able to just pull out the old fuse box and swing the wires into the new breaker panel, you would have about 4 hours labor, more or less.

If he has to add a junction box, and extend wires to reach the breaker panel, you will have to add more time.

Your bill will depend on the electrician's rate per hour and if he charges a service call.

Give a few electricians a call in your area and take bids. Let them know you are contacting other electricians, and you will get the best bang for your buck. Make sure they are licensed!

1. yes, you can upgrade the the box without touching the wiring. then do the internal wiring at a later date. 2. if the house wiring is using bx cable (has a metal shield around the cable) then you can most likely install 3 prong self grounding outlets in the rest of the house. 3. the original wiring is "probably" still safe assuming it hasn't been damaged anywhere or wasn't installed right in the 50's 4. first steps, contact some electricians and get quotes, let them know you are getting quotes from other electricians. they will probably be bringing in a new wire from the street and installing a new 100 amp panel. 5. the panel is about 100 bucks, the wire to connect to the street can be as high as 5 bucks a foot. the rest is labor. so 1000 to 1200 would usually be a fair price

My house has already be upgraded to 100 amp service, but the electric water heater is on a separate fuse "box" is it practical to change over to circuit breakers? There is room in the breaker panel to add them.

If it's copper wire it wouldn't be that much. A breaker box and all the breakers and connectors. About 3 hours of work. If it's aluminum wire then your talking about a re-wire and a lot of time and material.

Do you know anything about electricity? You can do this yourself but I warn against it if you're not familiar. Materials should run no more than $150. Best to you! ;-)=
