1. The temps. weren’t as high in general as they are now.
2. The humidity wasn’t as high either.
3. There was more drinking of water instead of sodas, coffee, and the like which inhibits the body’s ability to regulate temp.
4. People tend to get use to high temps if it is something they can’t get away from, your body tends to adjust itself. But since many of us use a/c we stunt your ability to do this, and make it seem like a more dramatic high temp than it really is.
5. Many people had farms with ponds, rivers, oceans, lakes, or streams near by to cool off in, that were safe to swim in and drink. Many that got their source from mountain run off or springs, which both are usually very cool.
6. People wore big hats to keep the sun off their whole head and neck areas.
7. There were more trees fighting against global warming and shaded houses from the sun. (No clear cutting for land/housing developments)
8. Old women always had hand held fans, which are very hard to find now unless they are real cheesy looking, small and used basically for decorative purposes.
9. Most work was done early in the am or late in the pm. so they would stay out of the sun as much as they could.
That’s about all I can think of right now but I’m sure there’s other things.

that's exactly what they did. Rampaging naked pools of sweat. There's a massive government cover-up about it though. So don't tell anyone you got it from me, okay?

They did their work early and late and during the heat of the day they stayed in the coolest place they had (cave, shelter, low area, etc...) just as people today handle.
On reason for that now cliché mid-day siesta was to avoid working during the hot part of the day.
You can survive without AC, just ask some of our veterans from the war in Iraq. :-)

I'm sure some probably died. Even today, with all of our advancements, people still die from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It can be dangerous to go outside. That's why I say stay indoors and play on Yahoo! Answers, it's good for your health :)

Didn't you hear? Before the invention of the SUV and the forming of the Republican Party, the temperature was a constant 68 degrees all the time.

I'm sure they did just like the animals do right now. They use mud or clay to cool off. I'm sure our distant ancestors discovered the cool benefits of mud.
