I think you've hit on something very prescient !
The voice of the Democrats, whether it represents the general rank and file members, is overwhelmingly a Socialist message. I think a lot of Democrats don't even realize how far Left their party has drifted. The problem is, a lot of people aren't very savvy about politics. All it takes is for some Democratic leader to present a program as the fulfillment of the American dream of equality, using words like "fair", "equitable", and "compassionate". Liberals eat this stuff up like Homer Simpson gobbles up doughnuts.
For example, if someone is touting a new government program, all they have to do to lure the Liberal is to present the idea as being the fulfillment of social justice, that it is a program of generosity. Liberalss don't realize what is being put before them is pure Socialism.
Soviet dictator Khrushchev once observed: "We can't expect the American people to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving them small doses of Socialism, until they awaken one day to find that they have Communism."
Norman Thomas said: "The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of 'liberalism' they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."
At some point, I think we'll have some sort of "final showdown", where Conservatives and Liberals battle it out for the hearts and minds of America.
Print this question and post it on your refrigerator. I predict that within two years we'll have a national debate on the future direction of America: capitalism vs. socialism, and Time Magazine may run a cover story, just like you proposed.
Maybe you should write a letter to Time Magazine and suggest the story. Perhaps they will find it as intriguing as I do.

We're not even close to a civil war. If you look at the facts we're not even that polarized, at least no compared to many times in the past. Read some history, there's been times when one faction or another were shooting each other in the streets.
The difference now is that we came out of a period in the mid-twentieth century where a lot of the political debate was more restrained.
That makes the extreme virulence of the personal attacks that has crept back in during the last four decades or so look extreme by comparison.
If anything there is less polarization today among the majority of voters, that's why competition between politicians for swing voters is so fierce.

The simple answer is creating an affordable healthcare plan for all. The number of people who are uninsured in the U.S. is staggering, which drives up the cost of healthcare for everyone. Another huge cost is fruitless healthcare services, for example those who demand healthcare for conditions that will not improve. In a socialized medicine setting, the government has the privilege of denying care and medicine to some people based upon their prognosis. Lots of dollars are currently being spent on those with a dismal prognosis because it is paid for, yet there are children and the adults who support them who go without healthcare. I personally don't want to be the dialysis patient who is denied care in a socialized medicine scenerio, but at the same time, I can't imagine being the parent of a child who is in need of medical attention and I don't have any money. On the other hand, we have companies who cater to the healthcare industry who charge enormous amounts of money for supplies because they can. I don't know exactly how to control costs so everything is more affordable, but at some point, we will all have to suffer because of the status quo in healthcare. It is a huge dilemma, and though I would not want to completely change the way I get my healthcare, I can understand why the idea of socialized medicine is being tossed around.

The USA is only in the middle of a civil war if you're a severely brain damaged conservative and you believe this drivel.
The country is so polarized because the Republican Party continues to elect and appoint hard right people to political positions. The Republican Party continues to be dividers and not uniters.
Economic preferences? That's what the Cold War was fought about. What makes it funny to me is that you capitalists think you have to kill people that don't agree with your way of economics. I find it laughable. You're beneath contempt.

Figuratively speaking, perhaps. But it will never evolve into a real civil war. Liberals, who tend to be the socialists, talk a good game and get all worked up, but there's not a cause on earth that they'd actually fight for.

I think the struggle is between those that want us to have our actual constitutionally defined country back
and the forces of corporate fascism.
I have no problem with capitalism, and believe that some amount of socialism is good and necessary.
However to those that think the 'constitution is just a god-damned piece of paper', I am ready to do battle, in ink, pixels and blood.

Let's see. The media is a business, thus driven by capitalism. It would not be in capitalist entities best interests to ignore something that would lead to their eventual destruction. Therefore, if such a thing were happening, they would report on it. Therefore, if they are not reporting on it, you are imagining it.
Get it? It's called logic. Look into it one of these days.

We are in a civil war in Iraq, not in America. This country was built on differing opinion which makes us a great nation. The fact that we are involved in another country's civil war is the biggest mistake an administration could make...
