it's a bit uncomfortable, but compared to the contractions it's nothing.

RE:
Does getting an epidural hurt?
I hate the thought of a needle going in my back! What does getting an epidural feel like?

I had one when I gave birth to my son. I myself was very scared about getting one because I hate needles. I had heard all the risks and so on. I was induced and had an iv that they were giving me pain meds through. I got to a point were I couldn't handle the pain. I asked for the epidural. It didn't hurt. As a matter of fact, all I remember was the anticipation. I was very numb though for a long time. My son was born at almost 9 at night and by 10 the next morning my legs were still tingly and kinda numb feeling.

In all honesty.. I'm a wuss with needles (and I have 4 tattoos, none on my back though) and the epidural did hurt. It took 2 nurses to hold me still but they told me to cry and scream, just don't move and it was over quick. I will take the pain of the epidural though over the pain of the contractions I had any day! It's over so quick and so fast you don't remember it.

You hardly notice the pinch seeing as how you don't get one until you are in hard labor. I had a bad experience with mine though so I ask everyone I talk to to really consider the consequences before getting one. The doc that did mine punctured through my spinal columnn and spinal fluid leaked out of the hole which caused the fluid around my brain to drain down. I had to have 2 more procedures where the took blood from my arm and injected it back into my spinal colum but they were not successful. I ended up in bed for the first month of my baby's life. It was the worse pain I have ever had. Every time I tried to sit or stand my brain would hit the sides of my skull. It was terrible. I really missed out on one of the most exiting parts of motherhood (the first month). Good luck. Sorry if I scared you but if I knew then what I know now I would have just taken the pain for a few more hours. Best of luck!

No. It kinda feels like a worm moving through your spine because they numb the area first. The only part that hurts is trying to hold still because by the time they give you the epidural your already in a lot of pain and they want you to hold perfectly still which at the time seems almost impossible!

There is so much going on when you are in labor that the epidural is just one more thing - it really didn't bother me too much - just pressure and "weirdness" the novacaine shot they give you to numb the skin stings a bit - but that's all.
BUT! You can always opt to have a medication free delivery, it's your choice, and many many women do NOT use any meds.
Good Luck

You don't feel it, take it from someone that cries when she has to get a blood test. The constrictions are so strong and painful, that you just want to get rid of them no matter how it's done. I've had two already, I didn't feel a thing, I just wanted the pain I was feeling to end, and it gave me the courage to go trough with the epidural process. But, I repeat, you wont feel it, I don't know why, but you wont.
Best of luck on your delivery! CONGRATULATIONS! God Bless!

I dotn even remember feeling the needle, because i had such strong back labor i was miserable from i didtn even feel teh epidural, so dotn be too scared. They are wonderful, i didnt realize how great they realyl were until i had my daughter (2nd child) completely natural, because we barely got to the hospital in time. By the time i made it there she was born the next minute....dead serious. So dont be scared of the epidural, its worth it in the end.,

It doesn't hurt at all....they give you a shot to numb the area first. The shot feels like a normal shot and then you don't feel the epidural. Don't worry, you will be fine...and congratulations!
