We had a tankless water heater put in. Ever since, we smell gas when a lot of hot water is used. Very strongly sometimes. We've had the gas co at the house twice and their meters have read 0 both times for gas or carbon mon in the house. How can we smell it so strongly and yet not have a leak?

I would definitely call the installer to check his work. If you didn't have this problem before, then something was done to cause this. I am very suspicious of a retrofit where tank less heaters are concerned. There is still a lot of confusion surrounding how these heaters need to be installed. If you had a tank water heater before, and it was replaced with a tank less unit, did the plumber change out any gas pipe? A standard tank water heater uses 35,000-40,000BTU's of gas, compared to about 450,000 BTU's for a tank less unit. The gas supply would definitely have to be increased for this size demand. The other problem, is the flue pipe. According to the manufacturer, a regular flue pipe is not sufficient, and a new stainless steel vent is REQUIRED! The cost of the flue pipe would be so enormous, as to make a retrofit almost to costly to install. So if these items weren't addressed, ask what was done exactly, and check with the water heater manufacturer for their recommendations. Good luck!

Maybe poppyman is right, did the gas Co. check their meters after the tankless heater is running for a while off and on?

It could be a burner that is not properly adjusted. Have whoever installed it come back and check it. Also make sure the exhaust vent is not blocked and is adjusted properly.
