You can take fingerprints from either hand, you just have to specifiy if it is left hand or right hand etc. Usually people will use left thumb prints or left hand prints just for uniformity.

Last time I had an ID card made they took fingerprints of both hands. If they're only taking one, it's probably just a business rule and has no scientific reason. (If I had to guess, it's because most people are right-handed and that fingerprinting ink is d*mned hard to get off--so using the left hand makes it easier on righties to get back to writing, using mouse, etc. For those 10% of us who are lefties, I guess it's just tough noodles for us)

For most people left hand is not the dominant hand and right hand is used much more and chances of injury etc. are more which may affect the fingerprints. Left hand is less probable of injury in such cases.

my guess would be most people are right handed so maybe the fingerprints on our left hand are deeper and give a better mark- i dont know just a guess - interesting question though -

We use left hands less than right hand. Therefore, it is easy to recognize.
