I brought my car in for an oil change because the change engine oil light was on. After getting it "fixed" by the mechanic the light remained on. When I asked them why this was they said they simply forgot to turn the light back off. Are they lying to my face? Wouldn't the light go off once the oil got changed? Anybody else have this problem.

If it's not a oil pressure light, then yes, they would have to reset it manually with a computer. The light is not actually linked to anything that would tell it the oil was changed.

A couple of things you can do...

One - take it to a place like autozone - they'll hook up a computer to your car's system to see what the check engine light means. It's free to do that there.

Two - check your gas cap. Sounds silly, but a lot of cars are set up to display the check engine light when the gas cap isn't on tight and/or crooked.

Three - take it back to the shop and insist they reset the light. If it's because of the oil change, there's ususally a reset button that will go off if that was the problem.

Four - get some black tape and gently place it over the light so you won't see it! Just kidding about that one.

I had a car that did something similar. After the oil change, there was a button to reset the gauge. Sometimes the mechanics would forget, so I would press it myself.

no the light won't just turn off, it has to be reset by the mechanic, unless you know how to do it yourself. Chack your owners manual to find out how to do it, or ask your mechanic to turn it off.
The dirty mechanics arent going to rip you off on an oil change, it is usually more complicated repairs that a lot of people don't understand. Check your oil, or have someone who has a bit of mechanical inclination, and see if it looks new.

What has been your experience with this light before?
Has it gone off after an oil change previously.
Usually, they can reset the light. Take it back to them.

But before you go, check the oil to see if it is clean or dirty. Also, look to see if the filter has been replaced.

Good luck.

No, the light must be reset. Have it done. If you tell us the vehicle make and model, someone will know how to reset it. On my GMC, turn the ignition switch to on 2 times and fully depress the accelerator peddle 3 time and it resets.

No, the light does not go off automatically. There is a special "sequence" of using the key that will do it. It should even be listed in your owner's manual. This sequence is easily forgotten for places that are in a hurry, since this is not a function that ALL cars have.

Yeah, buddy they sound crooked. The reason your light is on is the sensor my friend and you can buy one at any local parts store and very simple to replace. You can do it honest. The oil change was great but the sensor is your problem not the oil change.
