The love of God, family, friends, and pets. The beauty of the world I live in. Running in a field of wild flowers. Watching a doe and her fawns at dusk on our lawn. Watching a beautiful sunset as I sip hot cocoa after a day's work. Sliding under the covers on a cold night and finding I DID remember to turn the electric blanket on. Fishing on a warm spring day. Or summer day. Or a cool autumn day. Or a cold winter day.

I NEVER refer to my "heart" when I do my thinking and decision making. The heart is a pump. It sends oxygen around my body, and nutrients through the blood stream. I use my intelligence here in my noggin to do the thinking and figuring, and IT can answer the question about the "best" things in life that are free.
Special moments of pleasure, peace and/or contentment are among the "best" things, but really nothing is "free" because everything comes as a result of our personal effort in one form or another. You don't get anything "good" from life that you haven't some way, somehow, paid for somewhere along the line.
I don't mean "paid for" in a bad sense, like, if something good happens to you, you'll "pay for it" through something bad later. I mean that we are ultimately responsible for the particular course our life is on, that sets us on the right track for "the best" or "the worst" things, depending entirely on how much personal effort we have put into going in that particular direction. Usually, going down the "wrong" road requires little effort at all. It's like being on the side of a mountain, and you have two choices to climb to the top, or go to the bottom. It's the climbing higher that is hardest. If you can't make the effort to do that, all you have to do is "fall" to end up at the bottom. But by doing the hard work that it takes to get to the top, one of the "best things" in your life is going to be the absolutely wonderful view. You could say that the view was free, but in fact it was paid for by your own hard effort to get to that place where you could enjoy it. I think that is the way it is with just about everything else in life. You reap the benefits corresponding to the effort that you have made.

The best things in life....
..... are the little moments you dream of happening, thinking they never will and yet the seem to happen anyways.
....loving someone with all your heart, mind, and soul, and them loving you back not a second less.
....having someone there whenever you need them. and them dropping everything you're doing just to see if you're ok or just to be there because you needed someone to just hug.
....not taking life for granite and living life to the fullest.
....having friends and family that mean more to you than life its self.
