Looking for an area good for families with good schools and somewhere I could find a 5 bedroom house on a large plot for around 500,000 AUD. Within 45 minutes drive of a beach would be good but not essential. Does such a place exist ??? If not how far out would I need to be? Thanks in advance

The only area I can think of fitting the requirements would be the Central Coast, but its a fair distance north of Chatswood. Otherwise $500,000 doesn't buy you much in Sydney unless you're willing to look in Sydney's western suburbs.
That said, five bedrooms is a lot for a standard house, most only have 3-4, so you will probably find it hard to find 5 for $500,000, even in the western suburbs or Central Coast. You might need to lower your expectations

I haven't had such a good laugh for ages. You need to look a lot further than 60 minutes drive for a big house that cheap - if it exists. I wouldn't consider driving to Chatswood daily either, it has excellent public transport. 60 minutes each way in heavy traffic is not a good way to spend much of your day.
I would have a look at the housing section of the Sydney Morning Herald on a Saturday to see what's available. It is online at http://www.smh.com.au You might find something but I doubt it.

The central coast is the only place that would fit your budget and there is a train line that goes direct to chatswood and north sydney. If you forget about buying a house then look at frenchs forest/belrose. That is about 10min drive from both chatswood and the beach, very leafy and quiet too - not great public transport though.

you definately need to look on the central coast. It is a nice area and has great water areas. It is close-ish to Newcastle which has some of the best beaches in Australia ( Also where the pasha bulker got stuck). You may have to buy land a build a home as 5 bedroom places arent that common in that area. Good luck

If you are working in Orlando, there is no reason you shouldn't live there too. Unless you want a commute, you should be able to find a good selection of houses under $500,000. In Orlando, $500,000 can buy a nice house is a good neighborhood with good schools.

hey..if you are willing to double your amount, for 1 million AUD, you can get a decent 5 bedroom house in strathfield, with good schools, good for families and 35 mins drive to chatswood and the beaches...
