agree. The plastic bags often end up in places like the ocean & on beaches. Would be one less type of item for the volunteer beach clean-up crews to be picking up. Sure, the plastic bags are handy for some things, but I've saved up a bunch already. Several plastic bags can be carried at once, but they will also split under a heavy load, & each one doesn't hold much when the baggers try to pack them light. As it happens, we're in the process of making the switch over to reusable bags with the paper ones costing 10 cents each. We'll be joining 75 other jurisdictions in CA that have already made the switch. Trader Joe's & the health food stores have done a lot in leading the pack. Trader Joe's sells great colorfully designed vinyl bags the same shape as the paper bags for $1 & $2 & have had campaigns with prizes drawn for those who bring their own bags. The vinyl bags seem to be lasting 10+ years. I've been using these bags there & at the health food store for many years & another store that gives us a nickel back for each bag we bring. For bags that don't have sturdy bottoms or sides, I'll put a piece of cardboard or a box inside. Works great for groceries & for potluck dishes. Sometimes I bring a nylon insulated picnic carrier with blue ice inside for my milk & other perishables. So now the next step will be to start carrying these bags when I go to Safeway & other stores like CVS. It's good we'll now have a strong nudge to do this, too. A couple of us at work also use the cloth bags for carrying our lunches rather than buying an expensive lunch tote. So, they can be just as versatile as the plastic & paper bags.

In Ireland plastic bags are almost banned.Shops charge 15 cents EURO for each one , the population is encouraged to use reusable type. And yes I totally agree.

Agree, I have 4 cloth bags that I have used for grocery shopping for the last 8 years. They can hold more weight than the plastic bags, are better for the environment and if they get soiled I throw them in the wash and hang'em outside to dry to reuse another day

I completely agree and wish all stores would go to it or at least allow you the option to bring in your own canvas bags or collapsible tote bins (love those).

I detest those plastic bags. They don't hold their shape and spill all over the car if you don't tie them shut. They tear too easily. Can't really be reused for much more than garbage bags in the bathroom. Nobody here accepts them as recyclables (even the grocery stores won't take them back).

If I only get a few things and can hand carry them to the car, I won't even let them put it in a bag. Please people. I don't need another plastic bag! Don't make me take one.

Yes agree definitely. Problem is, I always forget to take the bags along with me when I go shopping. I think Lidl has the best idea. They charge for carrier bags and don't even give thin ones away. the incentive is fantastic. If you forget your bags you can either pay 5p or 10p for each carrier bag or load your car boot with loose shopping. An excellent idea don't you think?

I like Costco's approach to it. They don't provide bags at all. You bring your own. That covers the problem and saves them money too.

To answer your question though, I think that they both have their place and the plastic is over used.

Great idea if you want to put the time and trouble into your own bags. The bags are free or at least they are added to your cost at the checkout even though you may not know it
